CNN reporting that as of 2:00 today, 28000 acres have burned.

For context, if you started at the point in Pittsburgh, drew a line north and east up the Allegheny to Verona then a line all the way south to the Mon river near the Westinghouse bridge, you would cover 28,000 acres. That’s all of Downtown, the hill, the east end, hazelwood, tl and nocera in greenfield, hazelwood, Swissvalle Braddock Edgewood forest hills Churchill and part of Penn hills

I want to throw up

Re that photo

Perspective is looking north-ish. The black void just above the fire is the Santa Monica Mnts, runs generally from Glendale in the east to coastal Ventura County in th west to form the southern lip of the San Fernando Valley. The cluster of lights near the window frame is Santa Monica (the Pier is at the bottom edge of the picture), the cluster of lights along the coast on the far left side of the fire is the part of Malibu where Pepperdine is located, the city scape north of the fire is the Valley The bright stripe of light running east-west in the Valley is the 101 freeway. The black void along the 101 with no fire is the break between the SF Valley and the Conejo Valley (the lights in the upper left of the photo are Agoura, Westlake, Thousand Oaks). Basically where the 101 hits that break in the valleys is where our house is.

If you focus just on the 19 - 88 corridor, it would stretch from mcneilly road all the way south past trax farms on the 88 side and past lindenwood on the 19 side.

We’d recover okay if that chunk of the city got torched

Neighborhood to our immediate south just got moved to evacuation warning status. Which is basically "You don't have to leave now, but you should be sure your car is gassed up and your go-bag and PPP supplies are ready."
This is alarming not just because of the proximity but because it means the fire is moving up the ridge towards the Valley, which is against prevailing winds. If it crests the summit and starts into the Valley itself, yikes.

These are from the fence along our backyard, looking southeast. The hills are above the neighborhood called Tarzana.

The black smoke is indicative that it's close to the burn line, i.e. the stuff that is actually on fire. They don't really resolve in the zoomed in photo, but with the naked eye you can see the air assets making their passes and the fire line is far enough up now that I could actually observe water drops.

Annnnnnnd as I was typing that I noticed an uptick in the sounds of air traffic overhead. That is because a new fire has lit off near the Victory trailhead, which is all of 1/2 mile from our house.

We've been officially upgraded (downgraded?) to evac warning. The boundary of the mandatory evac zone is 4 blocks from us.

Stay safe, tif. My social feeds are full of friends posting updates. Some have had to evacuate but most are still just on the edge. Scary stuff.
