mini meow got detention of saying “hawk tuah”

he has no idea what it means. his buddy told him to say it and he repeated back to him “hawk tuah? what does that even mean?” and the teacher heard him.

I almost pushed back on it to the principal, but there’s no way they’d change their minds.

Man, I don't even know what it means. I'm feeling pretty old right now.

Two stories:

1. Our manufacturing manager likes to form teams to solve problems and always calls them "task force".... and abbreviates them. I was waiting for one that starts with D to see if she'd stick with it. Sure enough, this week, the "Drift Task Force... DTF" was formed. I asked her to change the name and had to explain to her what DTF meant.

2. When I was in elementary school, I recall doing African geography. I had heard the N-word from my uncle many many many times as a young child. I saw Niger... I yelled the n-word not knowing at all what it meant. I just was excited to see a country that I had heard of before. I got sent to the principal, and my parents were called. I don't recall any punishment beyond that as everyone understood the misunderstanding.

For Bedford county in the early 90s, he was actually pretty tame with his racism.

But yeah, not a role model, for sure.

I had an uncle Dick and my other uncles had me believing his real name was Harry and that his friends called him big Harry Dick. Got in trouble for that one, having no clue what I did wrong.

In 5th grade a new kid came to my school, his name was Patrick Dick. His fathers name was indeed Harry Dick.

In my grad school program there was a Todd Day and a Tom Marrow. They shared a mailbox.
