Jagr hinting retirement (2022-23 season, 50 years old)

Post by Tomas »

Jagr's Kladno Knights are playing HC Jihlava in the finals of CZE2 league. The winner will get promoted to the Czech Extralague. Kladno was supposed to be the favorite, but they lost the first two games.

I am not sure Jagr would go for another season in the second league if Kladno does not get promoted (especially since his point production declined quite a lot this year, despite playing on the 1st line with the biggest team's star Tomas Plekanec).

You can watch the series on http://onhockey.tv/ (which, BTW, is the best streaming site for pretty much all leagues around the world). The next 2 games (played in Jihlava) will be:

Wednesday and Thursday (4/21, 4/22) at 10:30 AM Central.

I half wondered if Jagr was shooting to play as long as Gordie Howe played. But Howe still has several years on Jagr.

Well, www.onhockey.tv has Jihlava vs. Kladno in HD. Jihlava up 1:0 after one minute of play. First time this season I see Jagr playing. He looks his age...

Jagr & Kladno bought themselves (at least) one more game. Kladno beats Jihlava 5:2 (Jagr without points, but Plekanec 1+2 and awesome), and cuts the series deficit to 1:2. Game 4 tomorrow...

[I personally hope for one more year - he is the truly last player of my generation - in any sport - who isn't retired yet...]

Jagr was 15 seconds away from scoring the only goal in Game 4. But Jihlava got the equalizer. Game tied 1:1. OT next.

Both goals here:

Edit: And Kladno scored quickly in OT. Series tied 2:2. Jagr will "live" at least 2 more games...

Kladno lost Game 5 to Jihlava 1:2 .

Jihlava leads the series 3:2, and can close on Tuesday on their home ice - possibly sending JJ into retirement(?)

Neither of the teams won a home game this series...

Game 6 to start at 10:30 AM CT today (stream on www.onhockey.tv )

If Jagr gets stuck in the 2nd league, it will be mainly because of this Russian goalie (Maxim Zhukov, otherwise belonging to Toronto Maple Leafs):

Yep. Game 7 on Thursday, 10 AM CT.

I don't think anything can ever top Martin Straka (his last career goal being the GWG in the 2nd OT of Game 7, winning his 1st - and only - career championship; also first ever for his team, in their 57th season), but 49-year old guy winning the title (even if on the 2nd-league level) and promotion is still pretty cool...

Oh yeah that Straka moment was amazing stuff. Brings a smile to my face thinking about it now.

That was a moment. Straka had the game 6 OT winner in the Buffalo series too, after Mario tied it late in regulation. Tend to forget that d-man he abused was Gonchar.

Straka from Lang and Morozov? It's as if that announcer didn't just narrate the replay.

That was something! I remember there were many people on LetsGoPens who were watching that Game 7 live. Interestingly, whoever was responsible for TV broadcast completely messed up, and it took quite a while for them to show how Straka actually scored his last career goal. Here it is shown from a better angle (starts at 6:25):

(BTW that clip shows how close Straka was to losing that Game 7. Zlin equalizer with 10 seconds to go (@5:38) was bad, but that chance at 6:05! :scared: )

Lang was so underrated on that second line.

Kladno went up 4:0 in the first period (Jagr with one assist). Then Jihlava scored 2 and is pressing Kladno big time now - all in the first half of the game.
