Finally got around to watching Unbroken. I was a big fan of the book, and looked forward to the film but was underwhelmed by the reviews and decided to catch it at home.

It captured the essence of the book, but like most biographies, it would have worked better as a miniseries.

Some great air battle scenes, and the crash scene as well. Showed plenty of the POW torture stuff too.

But Angelina Jolie decided to have a key part of Zamperini's story shown as a text epilogue. He actually suffered from PTSD and was a drunk for several years after the war before meeting Billy Graham (yes, that Billy Graham) at a tent revival out in Los Angeles. He then traveled back to Japan to forgive his captors, except his main tormentor, who refused to meet him. That would've been a great visual scene (the forgiveness part). Instead, we get a paragraph of text about it.

And the Coen Brothers worked on the script, which I wasn't aware of.

Not a bad film, just kind of a let down.

I don't have kids, but I would say yes. I don't recall anything scary or frightening in the movie. Was pretty much just a live version of the cartoon.

I think it would have been a better film if it started with like 20-25 minutes of a "flashback" kind of thing that told the whole War/P.O.W. story and spent 1 hr and 30 min on the post-war stuff which is more compelling as a movie narrative.

You see Ella's mother get sick and the reaction to her death, but that's about as dark as it gets.

Alrighty then, I watched Whiplash. Great film. J.K. Simmons' Oscar was very deserved.

And now I've filled my work playlist with Buddy Rich, so there's that...

Chris Bell (director of Bigger Stronger Faster) has a new documentary debuting next month at Tribeca Film Festival titled "Prescription Thugs".



To me it looks like it has the potential to be another solid documentary. Bell did a great job taking an unbiased look at steroids and steroid use and now turns his focus on what is a major issue, especially in extreme contact sports like football and wrestling.

Who saw force majeure? The synopsis on the netflix sleeve makes it sound pretty depressing, but then I heard it's actually funny. Can anyone clear this up?

Just watched the M:I5 trailer.... looks really good.

Apparently the stunt where he's hanging on to the side of the plane was real. No CG.

I read a quote saying that documentary should be the last nail in Scientology's coffin. Sounds like must-watch TV, eh?

If anything, I hope it gets the IRS to revisit the whole tax exempt thing.
