Watched the new 4k remaster of Kickboxer last night for family movie night, it's been quite a while and it was pretty good. I always thought this was a mid jcvd movie and last night confirmed that again. Still an enjoyable watch, but it's pretty much a lesser Bloodsport. I do love that Paul Hertzog and Stan Bush are back after Bloodsport doing the soundtrack and it's basically a continuation of that.

Juror #2 was a good watch, felt like a lost movie from the 90s and I miss these kind of flicks. Good on Clint for still putting out quality movies.

So the delay in a new Bond isn't just in finding a new Bond, who potentially could've been picked by Broccoli already and nixed by Amazon since they weren't a big name.

Aside from reports that a script has already been submitted and subsequently rejected by Amazon with heavy notes, a major issue is Amazon wanting a "Bond cinematic universe," complete with stuff like movies about other 00s and Moneypenny tv series.

Broccoli has called Amazon "f*cking idiots," and I side with her 100% on all of this.

Absolutely nobody wants another cinematic universe period, definitely not for bond.

Evidently, they had issues securing distribution rights in the US because it's about white supremacists vs. the FBI. Looks really good though.
I watched The Order after giving up on the Steelers at halftime last night. Pretty solid thriller with beautiful location shots. Not sure how accurate it was to the real story, and it might have worked expanded as a miniseries, but a good watch.

I’m kind of amazed that no one in the production team of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice mentioned that trying to fit 84 plots into an hour 45 movie probably won’t work

We decided to watch Selma today. Excellent casting and powerful performances. Not sure why it didn't win more acting awards, at the very least.

"Flow." Great animation, and a surprising amount to dig into from a thematic perspective. (minor spoilers, I guess? idk?) There's a bit of a Noah's Ark vibe, an evolution of life angle to be had, there's climate change...you can easily look at some of animals as stand-ins for commentary on human behavior. All of that underneath your basic (but ever-relevant) themes of needing to put differences aside to work together and survive.

I will say, as a cat owner it was a very stressful watch at times, so, if you fall under the category, watcher beware. I doubt I'll revisit it for that reason, but again, there's a lot to chew on afterwards.

Oyelowo's career is interesting in that context. A bunch of minor roles, then THAT, then.....a bunch of minor roles.

Watched kill bills with the family. I think these are the most entertaining and fun of the QTs movies. After Jackie Brown and pulp fiction, I think his movies take a big dip in quality. I also don't think these movies hold up as well as when they came out. His 10 movies and done thing is pretty dumb and his filmography will not hold up down the road.

The movies subreddit had an interesting lineup of films from TCM today:

Black Legion(1937)
Confessions of a Nazi Spy(1939)
The Mortal Storm(1940)
The Great Dictator(1940)
The Seventh Cross(1944)
Edge of Darkness(1943)
Background to Danger(1943)
Johnny Angel(1945)
Nocturne(1946)

I haven't seen most of these, but definitely need to check some of these out. Good programming imo. :pop:

I'm not sure that I agree 100% on your police work there, Lou. The only movie of his that I don't go back to on the regular is Death Proof. That one is rough. But I could sit down and watch any of the others at any time and be completely entertained.

By the way, we decided to watch Fargo tonight so it's on my mind... in case you were confused by that first sentence.

I too could sit down and watch any of them and be entertained. For whatever reason, after rewatching a lot of these, they don't seem to hold up as well as used to. That could definitely be me getting older. They certainly seem to age themselves in certain ways. While they come across as original, I see so many movies he takes from. I don't know why that didn't have an effect on me then, but I see it now.

I'll check back in after we watch it but it's one of my favorites. Seems like a solid choice considering the current weather.

While I was looking to see if it was streaming anywhere, I came across the 2003 pilot that wasn't picked up starring Edie Falco and directed by Kathy Bates. So that's weird.

I've made peace with this, mostly because I've shifted my view of QT as an original visionary to more of a really talented DJ: he's got a great eye for which samples to use in his remixes. Makes great club bangers. But not anything of much substance.

Yeah that doesn't bother me at all. I'm way more annoyed by the films that were inspired by Tarantino (who was inspired by other films). Like Boondock Saints. I hate that movie.

The theatrical cut of the movie is tremendous, but the first reel stands out as a graduate school education on narrative storytelling in multimedia.

Coppola has merged into Ridley Scott territory. Whereas Scott has an inconsistent filmography - up, down, good, bad, never know what you're gonna get - Coppola front-loaded his career with some of the best of cinema between the late 60s and early 90s. Since then................. and you could say that his indulgence with Apocalypse Now Redux kickstarted that decline.

Yes. I'll be showing her the theatrical. Am very excited to see this 4k remaster, I've always been blown away with what I've seen on screen with this movie, it's always looked wonderful. This movie hits the same way 2001 does for me. Top of the top.

Do you know how they created the 4K? My understanding is that when he got the band back together to make Redux they used a new photochemical process/color timing/cinema black magic that required them to put a hex on the original negatives so that now Redux is sort of the only version that exists in negative form. (akin to the process that birthed the SW Special Editions)

Emilia Pérez has the most nominations with 13. I haven't seen it yet but I haven't really heard any glowing reports on it either. Nice to see the Substance recognized as it's not typically the kind of movie to show up in categories other than make-up or effects. I'm rooting for Demi Moore and very much rooting against Timothée Chalamet.

I am ashamed to say I have seen very few of any of the nominated films. Just Dune 2 at this point. My wife saw Wicked, and I would like to see A Complete Unknown.

By nomination time, we'd usually seen most of the big nominees at this point. Shameful.
