Now here’s where it gets interesting: From what I’ve been told, the Blackhawks aren’t the only NHL team trying to drum up interest in college hockey. High-ranking executives with the Penguins have apparently already been laying the groundwork to help the University of Pittsburgh (aka Pitt) go D1 in the future. Do they have a Pegula? The rumor is they might.

Now, this is not going to happen overnight. It may be years before we see the Pitt Panthers in Division 1, but it certainly makes sense. Pittsburgh has become a huge hockey town thanks to the Sidney Crosby-era Penguins and numerous NHL young guns, from John Gibson to Brandon Saad, have come from the area recently.

Pitt would also have a natural landing spot in Hockey East, where schools such as Boston College, UConn and Providence College would be familiar from past or present basketball and football rivalries. With Notre Dame joining the Big Ten, Hockey East now has an uneven 11 teams and while adding another program won’t be forced, it sure would make things easier in the future from a scheduling perspective.

Pittsburgh has a college hockey team already... Bobby Mo.

I would welcome a Pitt hockey team though. Would be fun to play each other.

I think that's where the Pegula like figure who can build them a rink comes in.

OSU uses the Schottenstein Center (basketball arena) for hockey. Pitt could theoretically use the Pete, though I don't know if the Pete has the necessary equipment to accommodate a hockey rink.

If you've got someone with tens of millions willing to kick in for it, I am sure they could make it happen at the Pete. That would be awesome

You'd have to think that the rink will be attached to the new on campus stadium

re: the Pete while it wasn't built for hockey, I wonder if there is actually enough room because of the Zoo seats being moveable as well as all that wasted space due to the suites on the court. There's also the issue of the equipment for the ice.. who the heck knows

Rink proximity is fairly high on most recruits list of questions to ask the recruitment staff. The schools that have their rink on campus really pimp it to potential players as well. Hopefully they can land it near campus

ND was never a good fit and Pitt wouldn't be either. HE is all New England schools. Orono is fabulous in January.

I hear the CCHA has spots available @LITT

One of dudes in our HS street hockey gang played on the Pitt club team. It's annoying that they still haven't progressed beyond that level.

Oh God, no. Pitt would need to cut their teeth in Atlantic Hockey for a few seasons. Hockey East would chew them up and spit them out. Tough to get a program off the ground in that fashion.

I was just chatting with my boss when he looked at his watch and goes "oh sh*t... I gotta get to the hockey rink." I asked if it was for the Penguins game tonight:

"Nope, Guy Gadowski wants to meet up with me for some reason. He's been hinting that he has a B1G championship ring for me, but I don't really want one because I don't know what the hell I'd do with it."
