I feel terrible for Ace. We ended up going through with his surgery, removed the ear mass, a mass in his chest wall, and took the warts off of his back. The cost ended up being right at $5k which is a lot but it included the chest mass and warts, which were not in the initial estimate, so fine, good, okay, whatever.

And this is how he looked when I picked him up:

I'm pretty upset that they had to take the whole ear. The surgeon explained that with dog ears the blood flows around the perimeter much heavier than the middle, so it's difficult to remove a partial ear. I don't fully understand that because some breeds get their ears cropped for aesthetic purposes, and dogs lose parts of ears scrapping with other dogs. But this is the course of action they took. There is the consideration that if this is cancer they've cut to very safe margins. I'm hoping when the hair grows back and partially covers the ear hole he'll look more balanced.
I also hate that they shaved off as much as they did from his head. I know it'll grow back but they probably could have been more precise.

We ditched the big cone and gave him a soft inflatable pillow that goes around his neck, so he's doped up on pain meds and resting as comfortably as he can.

We've had him for a little over a month now and he's been through a ton. I'm hoping this is his nadir and we're on the path to returning him to his best self from here on out.

Unbelievably ignorant, the whole thing. Our local shelters are overflowing with dogs, and she didn't bother to see if she was allergic to a dog before paying four bills for one? Oh, and she's a Ravens fan.

@dodint you are a great guy for taking in a dog like that and dropping 5k within weeks for medical stuff. The majority of people wouldn't do that.

Thanks for the sentiment but what will I do, not treat him? We brought him home and he's a good boy; that's his end of the bargain. My part is caring for him even if it's inconvenient at times. He can't run around with cancer hanging off his head for the rest of his life.
If you take anything away from this see it as a referendum on small animal veterinary practices being bought up by large corporations and driving costs through the roof.

You would be surprised at the amount of people who would not treat the dog, and either just let it be miserable or return it. It's not right, but those people are out there.

Yeah vet costs have def gone up. We have a fairly local smaller vet and even they have raised prices alot over the past couple of years.

this is true, but luckily dodint is fortunate enough to be able to afford that. most can't on a whim

I don't disagree, but if that is the case don't get a senior dog with known issues if you can't afford treating them. In general people get pets and don't realize how much it costs to properly take care of them.

Indeed. It's an opportunity cost, that's 35 flight hours up in smoke. But I'm not trading off grocery or rent money. (to ulf)

Well after an illustrious 19+ years, our family cat Crosby said goodbye overnight. The signs had been there for a while, so it wasn't necessarily a surprise. Every other cat we've had throughout the years, they've showed visible signs of pain or discomfort, so those were vet euthanasias. He'd obviously slowed down and had changes in behavior, but nothing to suggest he was in any real discomfort (regular vet visits/consultations agreed). So, a bit of a surprise that he just peaced out overnight in the same place he liked to hang out in the house (by the water bowl where all the action is), so hopefully it wasn't too tough on him. This Pens season just got even tougher to watch, ha.

Good critter, Crosby.

Pretty sure I would lose my mind if I woke up and one of my pets was dead. So fair play to you for being functional.

Well, credit to my mom for handling that. Not the greatest text to wake up to for sure, but we knew it had to be soon. I live close by so was at least able to help with the burial and say goodbye one last time.

And thx boys - his actual birth date was sometime in August '05. We always just assumed it was the 7th and celebrated it as such, because why not. ;)

@NTP66

Snagged this after a small water change today. He’s the last one of the original six and he’s a behemoth

Behemoth is right, holy ****. We had a turquoise that was that big once. His blue coloring was absolutely stunning.

I’m trying to think if I want to go in a different direction with the tank. I haven’t added anything in probably 20 months. We currently sit with:
One bosemani
One apisto
One silver tip tetra (started with 12)
20 or so rummy nose tetras
20 or so emerald cories

I was thinking of grabbing like 20 neon green tetras or maybe CPDs

Rainbows are schooling fish, so at the very least, I would add a few more of them.

I’ve thought about going all in on them and get like 30 more and have a big ass school. They are my favorite tetra. They school so tight together

I was organizing a closet today and found two of Eli's toys that I had saved after he died. A little shark that I got him for his last birthday, and a stuffed buffalo, because he always got excited and barked like a hyena when we drove past the buffalo herd near Bedford. Man, seeing those toys was such a gut punch. Even though he'll be gone 6 years in December, I couldn't hold back some tears.

Damn dogs don't live long enough.

Too true, mate.

Silver lining: You got to spend some unexpected time 'with' Eli today.
