He was a really good baseball play by play announcer but he didn't seem to know much about hockey. The Pirates and or KDKA fired him in 1975 after being their announcer since 1948.

Wow, yeah, he didn't seem to know anything about the pace or rhythm of calling a hockey game. There's hardly a single thing that he said that you'd hear in a hockey broadcast now or even at the time...it was almost like someone doing a bad impression of Bob Uecker over a hockey game...very bizarre. I could see it being interesting in the dog days of summer though...

That's a good point, faf. I remember watching KBL when I lived in Pittsburgh in the late 80s and we got most games, but certainly not all. Crazy.
