Question is: has there ever been a wider margin...?

@Mikey

I’m constantly seeing people on the internet/hearing people say “we need to TANK to get the best possible draft pick”. There’s no chance we end up with a top 3 pick unless we get super lucky in the lottery. Is there really any difference between the 4th and 9th or 10th pick in this draft? It seems like there is almost no consensus on who goes where (I’m assuming mostly because this class stinks)

It doesn't seem like there's any difference at the moment. I'm trying to flash scout as many guys that I think will be in our wheelhouse as I can right now.

At the moment, I'm not totally convinced that picking 6th this year is any different than picking 16 in other years. But again, still chugging through it. I can try to find a reasonable milestone and share thoughts if people care about a bunch of kids that we'll primarily never have...

tbh I hate the idea of "bad draft classes" because there's always going to be good prospects available in not-top-5 picks...but obviously it's such a difficult crapshoot, even for professional scouts/GMs

like for example the 2017 class was regarded as a "weak draft" but Heiskenan, Makar and Elias Petersson went 3-4-5 and then there was value later with Necas and Suzuki at 12 and 13, Robert Thomas at 20, Jason Robertson at 39, etc

the idea that we should be searching for the next Crosby is unrealistic and a bit short-sighted. There's a lot of value in pretty much any draft and it just matters on if we (both fans and the scouting team) get lucky

I for one would love see a quick-and-dirty Top 10 before draft day.

I think drafting Mario and then Jagr and then MAF and then Malkin and then Crosby has spoiled us in such a way that we now expect every high draft pick to come in, be the face of the franchise, and save us.

This is correct. Dubas has said time and again, this is not a tear it down to the studs rebuild but some of them just don't get it and complain they are not fully tanking.

This seems like a really long break between games

So maybe my being ornery when the Pens had a 3 PM and 1:30 PM B2B was justified :slug:

They've seemed to have had games in hand since the first month of the season.

holy **** Boston is 1-8-1 in their last 10. They are effectively tanking and are last in the conference currently
