Little stuff that you do to improve your day/life
When Tilted 10 opens this spring, I’m going to be buying play cards so that my wife and I can play a round of mini golf, bowling, etc. during lunch once or twice a week.

That has been one of the joys of spending my entire professional career in the entertainment industry in some form or other. That pick-up-a-guitar-for-a-few-minutes thing is a workplace habit that predates the pandemic/wfh by 15+ years. I've only ever worked one place where I didn't have a guitar handy at my desk.

This is something I really struggle with during a work day, and in my role, the work day could be from 7am to 10pm some days. And, unsurprisingly, I spent a lot of time burnt out and unhappy in the day.
Some of the things I want to introduce when I go back to work:
- actually take a lunch break and read a bit
- go outside and do something for me, not just to walk the dog. Get a tea, run a small errand, go to the library
- instead of a big to-do list, just the "must-dos" in priority order, both at work and home
- go back to swimming in the mornings again

While this is maybe not a realistic option for many, it is such a tremendous way to get a day going.- go back to swimming in the mornings again

I’ve tried working out in the morning. It’s not for me. I also struggle to nap because it usually results in sleep paralysis.
Two things that I do that improve my day:
1. The very first thing I do when I get out of bed is drink a full glass of water. It wakes me up and puts me on the right track for hydration for the day.
2. No social media. I deleted any account that a had a few years ago. It’s amazing the mental difference it has made. This is the only form of social media I have left.

That's a great idea. We have a mini golf place 15 minutes away, Rita's down the street, etc. Need to take advantage of the days we both have. When Tilted 10 opens this spring, I’m going to be buying play cards so that my wife and I can play a round of mini golf, bowling, etc. during lunch once or twice a week.

Michael,Rare thread creation from me, might be a bust...but what's some little thing(s) that you do that makes your day or even life better...?
Early or mid-afternoon, I wash my face with cold water. Kind of gives me a little reset, a little bit of energy.
What do YOU do to improve your life.

Walks...
If I'm at home, I walk to out local pool and back (4 miles round trip). If I'm at work, I have a loop that is about 3 miles. I don't know what it is about just going for a long walk and listening to a podcast or audiobook, but it puts me in a better place. I know it's time consuming, but it works.

I also got an adjustable dumbbell to keep near me for when something stupid happens at work, I can take my (mild, as I'm not crazy) frustrations out in a better way than punting my cat into the sun or eating 400 Reese's peanut butter eggs or whatever other destructive behavior I could potentially turn to haha
I think I need to incorporate more outdoor walks though...

The last week or so, I put my phone in grayscale mode. Seems like it lessened my screen time a decent amount...less appealing, less "satisfying" maybe...

I read an interesting book recently called "Don't Trust Your Gut: Using data to get what you really want in life"
There was a cool chapter on happiness and how to rate happiness and how difficult it can be. There's a lot of cognitive biases that get in the way. There was a research group though that had a bunch of people sign up to be pinged at random times through the course of the study and they were asked in real time: what are you doing? who are you with? where are you? how happy are you at the moment?
They did this for years. Over 3 million measurements from more than 60,000 people and then they dug into the data. Sex was the obvious #1... although, how good could the sex be if you took the time stop while you were doing it to answer the questions from the project?
Sick in bed was obviously at the bottom of the list. I'm not sure if you can see this, but go here: https://hc.a.bigcontent.io/v1/static/Do ... Gut_Enance and go to page 35 of the PDF. It has the happiness activity chart.
Interestingly there are "underrated" and "overrated" activities. Things that people think will make them happier and things that actually make you happier. The appendix of the PDF has that chart of expectations vs. reality.
Underrated activities:
-Exhibitions/Museum/Library
-Sports/Running/Exercise
-Drinking alcohol
-Gardening
-Shopping/Errands
Overrated activities:
-Sleeping/resting/relaxing
-Computer games/iphone games
-Watching TV/Film
-Eating/snacking
-Browsing the internet
Seems the key is doing something rather than being sedentary.

I'd love to see more details on this, because I could see it being true for certain aspects of gaming or even types of games, but not all. I love playing with my group of buddies online, and always seem to have fun.

drinking and sports - and people wonder why I'm always in a good mood?

I'm shocked that the "actually makes you happy" list is just a bunch of things that produce dopamine.

When I worked in the office, sometimes I would walk over to Express or something and pick up a couple things on annoying days. It actually was kind of a pick me up hahaShopping errands, what sadistic witchcraft is this?
I wouldn't go to, like, CVS for ****** Q-Tips or something...but buying some clothes? Sure.
Little stuff that you do to improve your day/life
Your brain also releases dopamine and endorphins when you make a purchase. That's why shopping can be addictive.
