Is it true they didn't give her (and by her, I guess it's all gymnasts, but it was targeted at Simone) the full difficulty points she deserves because they didn't want to encourage others to copy her as the moves are just too dangerous for non-Simone people? If so, she's transcended the sport. She's the GOAT.

I think in the case of the sumo tournament, you're dealing almost exclusively with a 'local' crowd, right? The Olympics might have 80% of tickets sold to overseas spectators. So it would have to be a combination of proof of vaccination and residency to get in.Shyster wrote: ↑Sun Jul 25, 2021 9:01 pm I'm a little surprised by that too. The summer sumo tournament in Nagoya was held a couple weeks early this year in order to not overlap with the Olympics. They permitted 50% capacity (I think somewhere around 4,000 people), and that tournament was held in an indoor arena. If that was acceptable, then I don't see why the outdoor Olympic venues, at least, couldn't have some spectators present.
Not sure how well "only vaccinated people" would work. I believe Japan is still in the phase were primarily people 65+ are the ones being vaccinated, and many of those folks likely don't want to be sitting out in the heat at sporting events. (Japan can be extremely hot and humid in the summer; there's a reason why their traditional clothes were robes with plenty of ventilation.)

I was watching some of the skateboarders, and they were eating payment hard. A lot of times I thought for sure they broke their leg or something, but they bounced back up. Also saw a girl smack her head off the concrete with no helmet and no sold it.
I'm not surprised by it, I've been around a lot of skaters back in the day. I'm just... getting old I guess.

my understanding is they basically put a cap on the difficulty modifier because no one can do what she is capable of doingcount2infinity wrote: ↑Mon Jul 26, 2021 1:29 pm Is it true they didn't give her (and by her, I guess it's all gymnasts, but it was targeted at Simone) the full difficulty points she deserves because they didn't want to encourage others to copy her as the moves are just too dangerous for non-Simone people? Could be. But my impression was that Japan had pretty much closed its borders to everyone last year, and that hasn't been lifted. Taken together, the "denial of permission to entry" and "Suspension of visa validity" lists on the website for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan seem to cover pretty much every country in the world. I think you might be able to get in from Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore, but the visa-preapproval rules have been suspended, so I think folks from those countries are still going to demonstrate some special need to enter the country, and I doubt Olympic spectating alone would have been an acceptable reason. If you're a foreigner who bought tickets, I'm pretty sure you've been SOL on attending for quite a while.
The Vatican is on the "denial of permission to entry" list, so not even the Pope could get into Japan right now.

And yet my friend who had Olympics tickets is out cash because they didn’t “cancel” the games. Just the audiences are canceled.
Gotta read that fine print.

US takes gold in both men's and women's skeet. In doing so, the men's winner became the first skeet shooter to win three gold medals.

I must admit that it rankles me when the USA does not win the gold in any shooting competition.

Watching skeet is incredible. They are almost robot like in their motions. Hancock ejects his shells faster than anyone I've ever seen.
