I'm interested in Jim's nomenclature for Gusev's ability to stick handle in traffic and make nice moves to beat guys 1 on 1.

What is that skill called?

James Neal has (had?) goal scoring ability, it couldn’t stick handle the puck. Like at all. No hands whatsoever. Chopped the round puck square. Robbie Schremp (blast from the past) had zero goal scoring ability, but silky mitts for days. They are different things.

can you two explain maxim afinogenov? like...was what he did considered "skilled"? or was he just this weird chaotic player always stuck in fast forward. he seems like the schremp profile (i totally know who that is, yep) but i don't have a grasp on the silk-level of the mitts.

"skilled" in general is sneaky difficult for laymen to rate.

Afinogenov had some skill to him for sure...and his ability to stickhandle at speed made him very dangerous. His ability near the net made him almost no threat at all. He's a classic between the 20s running back basically...he can't get you out of a jam because he's not tough and doesn't want to be touched, and he can't convert the chances he generates because he didn't dish the puck very well and he had a muffin shot...

A better example probably, though he was slower, Sergei Samonsov...he had better hands than Max even...but also, not really much of a finisher...there's talent, there's value in those games...similarly, on the lower level, Gusev has talent...he has hands...advancing the puck has value, carrying it across lines has value...it's like anything else, it requires to be contextualized in the player's overall skill set...

Hands and goal scoring ability just aren't the same thing. It's not up for discussion. You're literally trying to tell me that some people refer to nickels as dimes. I've watched more games with pro scouts over the last three years than I have with friends, I mean, it's just not how it goes. Hands and goal-scoring ability are just different. You can say hands near the net or finishing moves or finishing ability or whatever...but when you're talking hands, you're not talking the ability to throw the puck into the net.

Hands is referring to stick and puckhandling, particularly in traffic against opponents.

My attitude is only in response to yours. I'm as easy going as they come, but you're being aggressively wrong. Like, forget your opinion on Gusev, fine, you don't think he has hands or whatever...just the technical skills that you have defined are incorrect. I mean, by this attempt at logic, it means that Maxim Afinogenov didn't have hands...it's just not in line with reality. Even if you could make videos, you couldn't do this for Jankowski because he can't do this because he doesn't have hands...but regardless...
Whatever man. I brought up hands, and I meant scoring. You can refer to hands as ability to skate through traffic, good. fine. Whatever. It is quite clear what I meant.

... and you can watch games with whoever you want.

I'll try to remember to put in for your approval of hockey terms when I post something.

Hands: ability to skate through traffic. Got it.

Great, that wasn't so difficult...all you had to say was, "Hey man, my bad...I meant goal scoring...[stats about goal scoring]" and everyone would have gotten to Afinogenov and Samsonov much faster without all of chest puffing...

I had some time for this Ottawa offense coming into the season...obviously, their defense, and particularly, their goaltending is a mess (just fired their goalie coach the other day, in fact)...but that's a useful offense...

With Murray...I guess they’re possibly pretty sure he’s a bust, and could conceivably sit him out the rest of the year to get a look at their farm system. And from there, give him a chance to start next season and then yank the job away with a relatively short leash - depending on how they feel about the alternatives?

Or is there a chance they think he’s still an nhl starter?

That's a buyers market trade. I'm surprised.

WYSIWYG. Zajac and Palmieri for a 1st. Retention on both. Greer and Jobst are minor leaguers. Teams weren't willing to give up firsts because they feel like in a flat cap, entry level deals are even more important. That's clear here. In any other year, this package does better than just a 1.

The 2022 4th is conditional. If the Isles get to the Final, it becomes a 3rd in 2022 or 2023...

Clearly a buyer's market, as we all suspected. Tough to imagine that Taylor Hall alone would net a 1st even with retention based on this deal...

If you're Columbus, you're looking down at your cards and wondering if you can get even a 2 straight away for Foligno probably. This deal can't give the sellers a lot of good feelings...
