This is not exactly about COLLEGE basketball, but anyway:

Recently, somebody sent me an old interview with the director of 'Hoosiers' that talks about how huge ahole Gene Hackman was on the set. I finally read it, and the ending made me really laugh. The director talks about how Jack Nicholson was supposed to play the lead:
It would’ve been an easier shoot with Jack. A different movie but an easier shoot.

Definitely a different movie. It’s funny you mention that because a month or two after Hoosiers came out I was at a restaurant, Morton’s, with my agent. Jack walks in and sees me — I hadn’t seen him in a while. He comes over with this big grin, and he goes, “I’ve seen your movie. It was great. Hopper was great. Hackman was great. The kids were terrific. You really got to the people with this one.” And I said, “Well, thanks, Jack, but I’ll always wonder what it would’ve been like if you’d been in it.” And he put his arm around me and those eyebrows went up and he said, “A megahit, kid. It would’ve been a megahit.” And then he smiled and walked away.

That's brilliant and has been done by other local news outlets in the past. Everyone is limited on their highlights, including ESPN. It's a freakin joke that CBS and their subsidiaries feel like it's a threat to their rights fees for people to actually show the highlights.

As for the basketball itself, the games Monday were very blah. But they do set up some interesting matchups in the Sweet 16:

Gonzaga-Creighton -- if you don't like 3-point shots, don't watch. I'd expect a pretty up-tempo game and this o/u of 158 seems a touch low.
USC-Oregon -- USC won the only other matchup between these two this year by 14 at home. Oregon's athleticism was able to get out on Iowa's shooters and ran them out of the gym. USC is just as athletic and I'd give them a slight edge.
Michigan-Florida State -- fascinating matchup. If Livers is back, I'd give Michigan a slight edge. FSU's defense forced a ton of turnovers against Colorado and their 3-point game is top-notch. Leonard Hamilton seems to always get the most out of his teams in March.
Alabama-UCLA -- I'm leery of teams that live by the 3. All it takes is one cold shooting night in March and your dreams are dashed. Give Mick Cronin 5 days to concoct a defense to handle that type of offense and we could be looking at the Bruins in the Elite 8.
Baylor-Villanova -- I keep being wrong about Nova in this tournament and I don't know if I have them pegged for this one either. I feel like Baylor should cruise in this one but Nova's defensive game plan could also neutralize Baylor's 3-point game.
Arkansas-Oral Roberts -- Arkansas beat ORU by 11 in Fayetteville back in December but trailed by 10 at the half. There will be a high tempo to this game as both teams like to run. If I was a Piggies fan -- @Tomas -- I would hope that there's something in the scouting report about ORU having the nation's leading scorer. Ohio State and Florida seemed to overlook that early on.
Loyola-Oregon State -- Smart basketball against smart basketball. The basketball geek in me is going to love this one. But I think Loyola's got too much talent and experience for the Beavs to overcome.
Houston-Syracuse -- Cougs showed on Sunday that they can win a rock fight by getting by Rutgers. Houston pounds the offensive boards and the toughest thing to do in a zone defense is rebound out of it. If Houston falls into the trap that SD State and WVU did and continue to chuck against Syracuse's zone, the Orange may be able to steal another one.

My wife's alma mater (and where I played college soccer before transferring to Pitt) won the NAIA national title tonight.

It's basically free agency nowadays. Zero loyalty and they think that going elsewhere will help them get to the NBA. Nevermind in Wahab's case that he has a former NBA player coaching him who knows what it takes to get to the League. If you're good enough, the NBA will find you. In some cases, I get it when there's a coaching change and the guy that got fired is the one you signed up to play for. What ends up happening is that coaches can't build a core and are constantly dealing with turnover. That's rarely going to spell success.

Quality of play will suffer as well. If every season is basically pick-up basketball (or football) because you are trying to get 8 guys who just met to gel that's going to be awful to watch.

Damn, ORU didn't hang on?

This has to be the year the Zags finally get over the hump, right? Down year for virtually every college basketball blue blood.

And down they go to Creighton today.....

Thank you for your service Houston on the elimination of the Boeheim family. Enjoy your Elite 8 appearance until it gets vacated for your coach's NCAA violations.

Why wouldn’t UCLA foul?
Cronin is said to be a proponent of fouling and I think if the Bama player hadn't given it up when the doubleteam was on its way, they would have fouled him. But that's good coaching by Oats to tell his guys that they were likely gonna foul so they'd know to get rid of it. Where UCLA f'd up on that final play was not putting a guy on the ball on the inbounds play. That kills more time with pressure in the backcourt and then you get the foul when they get to halfcourt or maybe, they even turn it over. But at least it didn't kill them in the end.

My guess was with 4 seconds left, you run the risk of fouling in the process of the shot and giving 3 free throws rather than a 30 footer. If you've got 10 seconds there's more likely to actually be some time of limited movement and you can get that foul prior to a shot being thrown up.
