COVID-19

Postby Troy Loney » Tue Feb 23, 2021 8:57 am

Today is the first day since January 11 when the 7-day average of new US COVID daily cases increased on Worldometer. During the 41 declining days, the daily cases dropped from 255,311 to 69,235, i.e. by 72.9%.

It's mind-boggling to me that this was achieved without any wide-spread lockdowns, with significant parts of the US being pretty much open, with no hospital collapses... All while large parts of Europe have been in a shut-down mode for months...

[And just to clarify - I am happy, but almost uncomfortable seeing that "do nothing" approach works. I'd like to say that hopefully it is the "universal indoor mask mandate" (which, say, my state follows) - but then I see how many people in neighboring state of Missouri did not wear masks (because it's just recommendation there)...]
I think there's a bit of self selection going on. I think the numbers we saw from a few months back represents the absolute peak for cases in this country. The holidays were the only time large swaths of people were willing to expand their bubbles and ignite the spread. I think we have naturally adapted into a routine where a sizeable chunk of the population just doesn't see anyone in close contact aside from the people in their household / small bubble.

Anyone in Westmoreland Co have any luck getting a shot?

My dad's been working through all of this (grocery distribution), and while rather healthy, has high blood pressure. 2 coworkers tested positive. Trying to get him an appointment, but not having any luck.
mac, my parents (82, 78) were able to call AHN last week and get appointments for this afternoon. I know it's not Westmoreland County, but it might be worth a shot (no pun intended) to see if he can get one sooner rather than later.

Thanks! There is also a clinic at the local community center (that is somehow sponsored by Walmart??) and I am hopeful they can get one there. I'd like my mom to get one too.

Quite, I wouldn't even had registered it if it weren't pointed out.

Has anyone actually been successful in getting an appointment via an online registration at places like Rite Aid, Sam's Club and Giant Eagle?

That's what I was wondering, when their appointment times open up. I guess they probably won't until they receive the vaccine shipments.

Huh, I thought Rite-Aid was gone. They all turned into Walgreens down here.

We had a Rite Aid and a Walgreens here in town. Right across from each other. The Rite Aid closed, and all the scripts transferred to Walgreens. It was chaos trying to get scripts filled for those first few months because Walgreens maintained the same hours and staffing levels...but now doubled their prescriptions. It was awful.

AHN did my parents too (70, 68) and they got both of their shots at the appointed times with no hiccups. They did a really good job.

We were just given a heads up about a Rite Aid in Hermitage with spots available. Selected a time, filled out all personal information, submitted, and were told the slot was taken. What kind of **** system doesn’t reserve a selected spot for five minutes while you fill out your information? Survival apparently relies on who can type the fastest.

This vaccination process is waaay too similar to buying a PS5/Xbox. I bet there are people who have set up bots.

I must suck at typing because I've tried dozens of times to get my in-laws appointments and nothing pops up. Been doing this for 3 weeks
