Wife and I came back negative. Waiting on son’s results.

Daughter still asymptomatic.

Hope we dodged the bullet but still quarantined.

Wonder what they'd think if the state said "Fine, we'll close everything then"

I think it's a valid question... why close outdoor parks but leave malls open? There are certainly many questionable closings, and questionable "leave open"ings.

Money and jobs.

But I agree, the playgrounds should be open.

I'm just waiting for the inevitable tweet about an LA politician photographed at a closed playground.

Malls make money for people. Parks just cost the local government money.

Yes... I, me, personally understand why malls are open. I get it. But it's a fair question to ask. They encourage outdoor activities where possible and close parks. I think it's a worthwhile question.

I would think the issue is kids would be on top of each other while on playground equipment.

I'm assuming CA has a mask requirement any time you leave the house, correct? Playgrounds should be fine.

We went to the playground a few times over the summer. Had our masks with us, but never actually used them since there were so few people there. Whenever another kid would come near, we'd just move onto another area until she was ready to go home. Worked out well.

Didn't click the Times link, but in recent months they've found adherence to mask wearing and social distancing is almost non-existent at many outdoor venues.
Restaurants have done yeoman's work at creating proper outdoor environments, but instead of only removing masks when eating/drinking people just ditch the mask as soon as they're seated. There's mingling amongst tables, as it's common for groups of 8-10 to show up and claim 3-4 tables in one area of the dining space. Add into that relatively lax enforcement by a majority of restaurants who are frankly relieved to have the patronage; there was a restaurateur in a local Facebook group was railing about the recent re-lockdown saying he didn't understand why people are "free to roam around the produce section sneezing on the broccoli" but he has to close down in-person dining at his restaurant. Another group member chimed in and pointed out that they observed zero enforcement of mitigation measures at said restaurant, and that buying food at a grocery store/farmers market is essential, but eating in a restaurant is not.

I have several public parks in my neighborhood, and I've rarely seen people wearing masks at all. It's bizarre, because adherence at indoor locations is pretty rigid and across-the-board. But it's as if when people are outside they just dgaf. Yes, the risk is greatly reduced when outside, but not when all mitigation efforts are abandoned. So shutting down in-person dining and parks and such is less about the specific risk of dining outdoors vs other activities, as it is recognizing where people are being irresponsible. Sort of nationwide we've been incredibly reckless in how we've reopened (or more specifically how people have indulged in the reopening), and we're now at a point where we are dwarfing our summer spike in hospitalizations to the point where we in CA are very likely to face hospital bed shortages (some counties have stopped sending ambulances to 911 calls).

Weirdly, the only outdoor activities I've seen since summer where mask wearing has been fairly widespread has been the protests and marches and whatnot. (At least where I live)
(Spoilered because it's a wall of text)

Update on our friends. Wife tested positive and continues to have mild symptoms. Husband has not been tested yet and has no symptoms but woke up this morning with a 103 degree fever.

The Thanksgiving numbers are beginning to roll in. My county of 68000 people had the highest single day count in months with 51 new cases today; SC had a 23.8% positive rate on 7200 tests, the highest number since the earliest days of the pandemic when testing numbers were low.

A friend of my youngest son's father tested positive; my son sits next to this kid in 3 classes and eat lunch next to each other. So if the kid tests positive, then we'll probably go into quarantine.

It's just circling around us, slowly getting closer...
