3 year deal seems a little light.

I was going to say something about not remembering many coaches getting more than 3 until I looked and saw Trotz, Quenneville, McLellan, Vigneault, and Babs all got 4 or more.
I think 3 is a good number for a coach. Gives them time to get the roster to buy in but also gives them enough time to shoot themselves in the foot and you're not on the hook for their contract much longer (unlike Toronto and Babs).

Nice deal. Brodin is a player.

I'm a fan of Brodin defensively, big time fan...but man, that's a healthy deal for him...you don't see a lot of 20 point d-men getting that kind of deal...

Buffalo has acquired Eric Staal from Minnesota for Marcus Johansson...

I'm trying real hard but I'm not sure I understand this move from either team's perspective.
Like, marginal salary cap savings for Buffalo (4.5 vs 3.25) but I'm not sure how the move makes either team "better", unless Buffalo is hoping Jeff Skinner will pull his head out of his ass for Eric Staal?

What makes you think the Sabres all of a sudden are trying to get better?

Buffalo could use some depth down the middle...allow some of the kids to start out on the wing so they don't have to do heavy lifting...
I don't get it for Minnesota, they get a little younger...but I'm not sure if they're trying to find some reclamation projects (Jugs, MoJo, Fiala, Rask, Hartman, Dubnyk)...it's a land of misfit toys and MoJo is a perfect fit for that...they need a center or two now...Mikko Koivu isn't coming back, Staal is now gone...what kind of centers are you gonna have going there for all these reclamation wingers...?

Oh, right, they'll exchange Matt Dumba for a center...I wonder if they go to Toronto there...I think Marner is too valuable, but maybe they think Willie Nylander is a center for them...maybe they go to Montreal, see if Domi is a match or Drouin wants another shot at center...

Edmundson is a good fit for a Montreal team that looks like they want to be tough...Edmundson with Petry is a real, real tough pairing...maybe the toughest in the East to get by...pretty decent value too...
I'm guessing the chart guys don't like Edmundson because he's exactly the type of player that wins and those guys hate because Edmundson is the guy that stuffed them in a locker in 7th grade haha

Does it really address a need for them, though?

If this is the only thing they accomplish this offseason, no, of course not...but this isn't suddenly going to become an offensive team, right?
You look at the RD: Weber, Petry, Ouellet/Mete...
Then you look at the LD: Chairot, Kulak, Mete/Ouellet...so you can see an improvement there...I think that they may cash out high on Kulak or on young Mete if they think Alexander Romanov is ready...so I think it's an upgrade, and then I think they're going to make a move with one of those guys...
Like you remarked about Buffalo...do the Habs really ever get better under Bergevin...?

There is the (short term) 3C that Rutherford is looking for. Instead, Rutherford retains 50% on Bjugstad.

Doesn't Staal have a MNTC? Do we know if Pens were or weren't on the list?

per Lebrun, he has a 10 team no-trade list and somehow Buffalo wasn't on it.Doesn't Staal have a MNTC? Do we know if Pens were or weren't on the list?

Staal said at the last trade deadline or maybe the one before it that if he's traded without his permission that he'll retire I'm pretty sure...and I know he was not informed of this prior to it happening...

Didn't he play with Kevyn Adams on the Canes? Maybe he'll be happy playing for him? Or nah?
