Pens trade first rounder and change for Kasperi Kapanen and change

I know this is being discussed in mikey's thread but this is big enough news to receive its own thread imo and I know the mods wanted this when the random thread was first created

Rutherford's string of trade "losses" continues.

However, this bumped Tanev off of my Seattle protected list.

I am not entertained.

It is
Kahun + Hållander + 1st for Kasperi Kapanen + 12 games of Conor Sheary

:( :( :( :( :(

I would almost rather have Kahun than Kapanen due to his versatility in playing in different positions.

I guess they think that Kapanen can contribute to the team the coming year(s), when the core still plays...

With our prospect pool and need for cheap help due to cap reasons I would have held on to the 1st unless I was offered something insane.

One could tie themselves in knots combining trades like that.

Yeah, I know and if it had led to a cup it would have been worth it. But still...

I'm not as against it as others on here. It's definitely a win now move, which is fine because Sid and Geno are running out of career

that said, I think we're going to end up exactly where we were in the early 00s before we drafted Sid once Sid and Geno retire/leave

Fine by me if we again end up with the core of another multiple Stanley Cup winning team.

yeah, I'm not terribly sad about it. 3 Cups already is great so even if we don't win another during Sid/Geno's tenure I'm actually ok. Any more would be amazing

Yup. TBH, I think we have about two more years of legitimate contending. Once Sid hits 35, I think we (and the Caps) are looking at some lean years.

As long as they get the right visionaries to rebuild a squad, I don't mind rebuilding. While it sucks to have your team suck, games are cheaper and I found myself enjoying the chaos.

Yea I can't see ticket prices going down dramatically like the old days. I think they've built enough of a base to support some leaner years, but if they get through those years say 3-4 past Sid/Geno retire, they better have some pieces for the next build, then you'll have trouble.

Same. Without some crap years you don't get moments like the Morozov Logo goal, or the scrappy replacements feel of the Lacouture days. Gotta experience the spectrum.

I’m in your camp too. It’s not perfect but I don’t really care about the pick. Hopefully we recoup it a bit with a early second rounder when/if we trade Murray.

And I think people are really undervaluing McCann. I think he is seriously miscast as a center. As a left wing, I think he still provides value. The problem is if we still think believe Tanev shouldn’t be down on the fourth line, we have hornquist and McCann as the wingers on line 3

My main issue with the team is I’m still a bit worried about the defense. On paper, it looks solid...but it seemed like our breakout was so slow this playoffs and the defense provided almost zero offensive support. Maybe the new assistants will help with that, I don’t know

As it turns out, the financial side of this deal benefits the Pens too. Kapanen’s contract, per CapFriendly, has been heavily bonus-laden.

Should have kept Kahun and told him to suck it up. He had major chemistry budding with Geno. This is just bad.
