That is a long way of saying that pagentry is what makes thephrase "BETWEEN THE HEDGES" gives most college football fans a slightly tingly feeling in the nether regions even if they don't care about georgia footballI'm strangely ok with the idea of no college football this fall because of this mess. A lot of what makes the game great is the atmospheres of the different venues and that feel of a big game. With greatly reduced or no fans in the stands, the games just won't have the same oomph that they always do. I wondered how I'd feel about baseball, hockey, and NBA with no fans when they returned and I've been good with it (though, hockey is still a little weird with no reaction on goals). Normally by this time of the year, I'm poring over preview articles and getting worked up for that first Penn State game of the year. When the schedule came out last week, I gave that Penn State-Northwestern opener a cursory 'meh'. I also have an ethical problem with colleges telling students that they're ok to take online classes but requiring athletes to be on campus.
All that being said, I know that no college football this season is going to spell the end to a number of sports as well as whole athletic programs across the board and that sucks. But maybe something like that has to happen in order for the economic model to get overhauled. It's become pretty ridiculous that some schools rake in the dollars while the vast percentage of the landscape barely scrapes by. We've become gluttonous when it comes to college athletics.
For those who are of the thinking that 'we need to continue to live our lives' and 'we can't live in so much fear', I just simply say that there are more important things in life than college football and sports in general. Another something I never thought I'd ever say.

"#WeWantToPlay." Well, yeah, but you're mostly meathead buffoons that trained all your life to play football for no pay. Your life is over in 1-4 years either way.
"We act like these guys can't get this unless they play football." And here is their king, Nick Saban.

Saban is 100% right that they are safer at Alabama playing football than they are randomly going to parties in their hometowns or hanging campus with nothing to do, and mad about it.
Besides the whole world was haranguing anyone who dared challenge a 16 year old girl about climate change, but all of a sudden college kids are too dumb to make decisions for themselves.

Sure if you think they're also not going to parties on campus which is pretty naive imoSaban is 100% right that they are safer at Alabama playing football than they are randomly going to parties in their hometowns or hanging campus with nothing to do, and mad about it.

I thought about that earlier when mulling over the Saban quote when it scrolled across ESPN. And you're right. But I am also free to criticize their incredibly stupid position because of that same acknowledgement of maturity (or majority, at the least).Besides the whole world was haranguing anyone who dared challenge a 16 year old girl about climate change, but all of a sudden college kids are too dumb to make decisions for themselves.
We, as a society, failed to take care of this when we had the chance. You don't get to keep having nice things, particularly when their existence exacerbates the problem.
As for the issue itself, if you think partying at a population dense 38,000 person campus is safer than partying back home, then I can fully understand your lament for the loss of college football.

They are going to go to parties no matter what. There is a bazillion percent higher chance that they listen to Nick Saban than an R.A.Sure if you think they're also not going to parties on campus which is pretty naive imoSaban is 100% right that they are safer at Alabama playing football than they are randomly going to parties in their hometowns or hanging campus with nothing to do, and mad about it.

Taking football away does zero to lower the chances they get or spread the virus.
The opposite is the reality.
People act like they are going to magically not be in groups of people

So if they're going to parties no matter what and you take away the variable of them traveling from state to state - you think it does nothing to lower transmission of the virus? We'll agree to disagree. And I want to watch football as much as anyone

Clarification from Freddy:
Do you think that, by having a football season, those players wouldn't do what you think they'd do if they didn't have one?

What makes you think kids from Florida who go to Pitt or from wherever in whatever school in whatever place are going to shelter-in-place and not be travelling? These kids are still going to be at school. Still going to be doing college kid stuff. So if they're going to parties no matter what and you take away the variable of them traveling from state to state - you think it does nothing to lower transmission of the virus? Are they not safer in a controlled environment?
An environment they've been in since July with almost no positive tests?

They are also less likely to contract and spread in a corralled space with adult supervisors whose job it is to keep an eye on them than they are without the carrot of gameplay dangling in front of them.

Outside of Rutgers, has there been any teamwide community spread?Almost no positive tests? That's a far cry from the truth.
The vast majority of cases linked to college football were folks coming to practice already infected.
