I can only imagine the breathless giddiness the editors experienced when they proposed this stupid headline. Journalism is dead.
There are a lot of amusing takes about the news media. About how these places have to sort of "wade" through the current environment and decide if they want to focus on long form investigative reporting and the monthly subscription base required to fund it, or just produce click bait headlines to drive traffic and ad revenue. The best is the institutions like the NYtimes that try to have it both ways, so you constantly get them having to edit tweets and headlines because of the differences between the stories and the headlines/tweets/

I read that article last night. It was infuriating

some words like "cakewalk" do have genuinely racist origins, but mixing that in with words that have absolutely nothing to do with race is intellectually dishonest and frustrating

CNN could probably survive for a while by just getting hate clicks. People hate reading this article is probably 75%+ of the overall traffic. And survive for a while, in that it's still the standard bearer for the fake news thing. So if they just went full trigger the very online conservatives, it would eventually lose it's symbolism as a mainstream news org.

some of it is silly without a doubt, but at the end of the day I can't muster up much energy to care. Words we are allowed to use or not evolve and change over time and we get over it. Remember when retarded was commonplace?

And? I am sure Fox News has comparable programs, are we just going to pretend that Fox News doesn't present a story that is vastly at odds with the rest of the news media? I don't have cable, but I assume Stelter's show is a ~serious version of the daily show. It's informative to try and understand how other people see the world.

Yea, I felt the same way when someone posted that Twitter link about the words they're changing. With all that's going on - it's just a meh, from me.

The thing is, words and terms like cakewalk, I bet only a small handful of people know the origin. It no longer has that racial meaning behind it today. Things change over time and the original meanings fade away. Some don't.

Most people will probably continue to use those words in everyday life anyways. It's like how everyone still refers to S&T Bank Music Park as Starlake. In fact I had to lookup what it is called now because I had no clue.

Isn’t the whole point of acting pretending to be someone or something you are not?

If you want more opportunities for Black or Asian or LGBTQ actors it shouldn’t just be in roles where they are playing those people. Since most here seem to love Hamilton, that’s a good example of allowing actors to act despite the person they are portraying.
