Rumors are circulating that Remington is preparing to file bankruptcy again. That company must have some massive problems to be in financial trouble during the biggest run on firearms in history.

The FBI released the raw NICS background checks for the month of June 2020. June was the highest month on record going back to November 1998 with 3,931,607 checks, which is more than 200,000 more than the prior record of March 2020. These are the raw numbers, so not every check was necessarily for a firearm. The NSSF takes the FBI's numbers and issues an adjusted number of checks that it supposed to be closer to the number of gun sales. Those numbers should be out in a few days. Still, it's quite likely that the vast majority were firearm purchases.

The number of checks so far this year exceeds the total number of checks in every year prior to 2012 and is within a couple hundred thousand of the total checks for 2012. There were 28.3 million NICS checks in 2019. If the pace so far this year stays the same, 2020 could see close to 40 million NICS checks.

None of the guns I'd like to buy are in stock anywhere. I'd like the Ruger PC Carbine with the AR-style pistol grip and stock. Can't find one of those anywhere. Heck, I'd also like a Ruger Bisley Blackhawk in .44 Special, and all those are sold out.

I thought ammo background checks might be contributing to the spike in NICS, but apparently the CA requirement is an 'eligibility check' that searches state-level records and doesnt hit NICS.

Remington has indeed filed for a second bankruptcy in two years. There are reports that Remington had been in "advanced talks" to sell to the Navajo Nation, but the talks apparently collapsed.

https://www.npr.org/2020/07/28/89616016 ... since-2018

In other news, SIG just announced that it will be selling the serialized fire-control units for the P320 separately as part of a joint program with custom gun makers like ZEV, Wilson Combat, and others. So you can buy the FCU separately and then buy whatever frame, slide, and barrel you want from third party manufacturers. For the third-party manufacturers that join the program, SIG will supposedly have a tool on their website you can use to make sure your combo of parts will all work together.

9th Circuit ends California ban on high-capacity magazines

The stay on the injunction by the district court is still in place, for now. But I think the end is in sight.

Unfortunately, my bet would be that the 9th Circuit rehears the case en banc and reverses the panel. That seems to be the way 2A cases typically go in the Ninth.

...

The rifle is a Browning X-Bolt Stainless Stalker in 7mm Rem Mag. I've wanted one for YEARS and this year I'm taking the plunge.
Ordered this tonight.

Ended up going with a Sig Sauer Whiskey3 3-9x50mm w/Hellfire Quadplex reticle. This one: https://www.sigsauer.com/store/whiskey3-3-9x50-mm.html

Stoked. My Dad wants to try hunting from a ground blind. Going to need some earplugs, gonna get loud.

I have a set of Peltor electronic muffs. They work great. I'd be looking at electronic plugs or muffs for hunting. You can actually hear better than normal when they're on.

Remington has an agreement to sell its ammunition business out of bankruptcy to a South Carolina-based investment firm for $65 million plus the assumption of liabilities. The sale would include Remington Ammunition and Barnes Bullets brands and assets. The $65 million bid is a so-called "stalking horse" bid, which is designed to set a floor for bidding before the bankruptcy court. It's entirely possible that other entities might be interested and submit higher bids.

It's not clear to me whether use of the Remington name would be included in the deal. There is precedent for something like that. Winchester Ammunition (owned by Olin Corporation) is a different company than Winchester firearms (made by U.S. Repeating Arms Company, which in turn is owned by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal); Olin licenses the Winchester name to FN for the manufacture of firearms.

I find the incestous nature of certain industries (automobile, beveridge, food, etc) fascinating and the firearm industry certainly delivers.
