he groups bidding to bring NHL expansion franchises to Las Vegas and Quebec City are one step closer to making their expansion dreams a reality.
Wednesday afternoon, Bill Foley, the prospective owner of the Las Vegas team, released a statement through Vegas Wants Hockey saying the club had been invited to participate in the second phase of the expansion process.
“We are pleased to report that the NHL has invited us to participate in Phase II of the application process to secure an NHL team in Las Vegas,” Foley said in a statement. “In this phase, we will be providing the League with additional information, including information about the Las Vegas market and the MGM AEG Arena being developed between Monte Carlo and New York New York. We will also be permitted access to information provided by the League that it deems important to us.”
Quebecor, which owns The Hockey News, is supporting the Quebec City bid. According to TSN’s Frank Seravalli, Quebecor, too, has been invited to participate in Phase II. Deputy commissioner Bill Daly confirmed the invitation to Le Journal De Quebec’s Kevin Dube.

Bah. I hate this. The NHL doesn't need anymore teams. Especially in Vegas.
I know why the owners want this, but blah.

If I were Quebecoise I'd still be pissed that my team was not only moved to Denver, but won a championship in their first season there.

The only thing I like about Vegas getting a hockey team is it gives me another excuse to go there. Like I need one. LOL

This. Diluting it all even further. Instead of strengthening the brand by moving a franchise like the Glendale Coyotes they add two more in niche cities. Maybe they'll do it like EPL and kick teams between the NHL and AHL, that would be fun.NAN wrote:Bah. I hate this. The NHL doesn't need anymore teams. Especially in Vegas.

Point is fair, but I would not consider QC a niche city as far as the NHL is concerned...as far as the world or even North America is concerned, sure, but not in hockey, in my opinion...

I understand Quebec City. I feel like they're an underserved market.
But Vegas getting a hockey team?
I can understand basketball. They have summer league bball there and UNLV has some deep history in the sport but hockey just seems incredibly weird

Agree. The Lindros documentary kind of soured my opinion of QC as a hockey town, but I think they deserve another shot in the same way Winnipeg did. If there had to be expansion QC and Seattle make the most sense to me. Maybe by 2030 after all this runs its course Glendale and Las Vegas will be tagged for contraction, an idea that will seem revolutionary at the time.mikey wrote:Point is fair, but I would not consider QC a niche city as far as the NHL is concerned...as far as the world or even North America is concerned, sure, but not in hockey, in my opinion...

The Canadian economy of the mid-90's was in a bad spot, not only did they lose Winnipeg and Quebec, but they nearly lost Ottawa and Edmonton and I believe Calgary had nearly run aground as well...I think QC will thrive, like Winnipeg has and will, probably more so, because there's more corporate backing in Quebec than Winnipeg, AIUI...
Las Vegas did solicit a lot of season ticket deposits and with the casinos and growing tech sector there to buy up some of those luxury boxes, in a gate-driven league that's a big, big plus...also, they'll have the market cornered on regional TV rights, so if people need something to watch that isn't Poker Stars, they'll have hockey...which could lead to some nice revenue ratings wise, perhaps...
I could see LV falling either way to be honest...ideally, the Coyotes moved there if anything...but curious to see how it plays out...

It seems almost ine itable that the coyotes move to seattle, doesnt it? Thats the only reason i can imagine the seattle groups were so cavalier a month ago.

Does Colorado "own" the Nordiques' history?
(Perhaps history should also be in quotes.)

This is an important point. Fewer stars per team creates worse hockey. Think about the NFL. Expanding two more teams in that league would guarantee a poorer product simply because there would be two crappier QBs in starting positions.MalkinIsMyHomeboy wrote:Tanner Glass is pumping his fist because he knows this'll extend his NHL career

add 2 new teams but eliminate the 10th, 11th and 12th forward. problem...solved-ish?TheHammer24 wrote:This is an important point. Fewer stars per team creates worse hockey. Think about the NFL. I think las Vegas is a much better city to have a hockey team than seattle
I highly doubt a team will be successful in Seattle
It's not a sports town
Laa Vegas on the other hand... People go there to go out to entertainment

you'd probably get casinos buying up a ton of tickets and giving them out as comps.Factorial wrote:I doubt an NHL game would draw many tourists.Algernon wrote:I think las Vegas is a much better city to have a hockey team than seattle
