It's also a testimony to the thin margins a lot of teams operate on, as well as how much expenses are past just what player salary numbers are.

so maybe I'm missing something here. MLB is planning on playing half of their season yet the players want full pay? am I understanding that correctly? if so, GTFO and welcome to the real world.
I say lay them off and let them file for UI.

No, I think they already agreed to play with a prorated salary based on games played. MLB wants to drop their pay further as the games will be fan-less to start.

You are missing something. They agreed to play for pro-rated salaries, so an 82 game season would mean about 50% and change of their regular salaries. The latest proposal from MLB proposed salary amounts at less than 25% of their full salary

gotcha. thanks to both of you for your replies. I had the TV on while WFH so I wasn't paying super close attention. the graphic that they put up made it look like MLBPA was wanting full season salaries.

Sounds like the owners are trying the split the union like the NFL owners have been doing to their players union for years.

To help with social distancing and to get the calls right, we should let computers call balls and strikes starting now.

Between this and the asinine decision to try to destroy minor league baseball Major League officials and the players are just stupid.

Let the whole shitty system collapse and re-build it with a salary cap and an improved compensation system for players.

I got my money on no season because they can't come to agreement on money.

Sounds like a plan to me but it will never happen.

There will be no baseball this year.

If Manfred tries to force a season they'll strike.

And then baseball will wonder why they continue to lose fans.

I posed this rhetorical question to one of my buddies via text: The nfl and the MLB are offering the same basic product (sports). The NFL sees the virus and says screw this thing, lets hype the sht out of free agency. Lets hype the sht (even more than a usual year) of the draft to keep these 'mericans distracted. And you know the nfl will do what it takes to get a full 16 game season in.

Meanwhile, the mlb owners said "lets use this as an opportunity to jam sht that we want down everyone's throats"

Agreed and thats what my buddy said too. I hold the owners primarily culpable because they are a. billionaires and b. crying poor over the lost ticket revenue.

But the players also need to face the music and accept that there will be a salary cap (and obviously a salary floor, sorry Mr. Nutting)

Maybe if the floor was something like $125mm, Nutting would sell the team.
