So it's no secret that I'm not a basketball fan, but I am finding this Last Dance thing utterly fascinating. With that in mind, as a complete tourist, can someone please explain to me how the Detroit Pistons of the late 80s-early 90s were not all sent to jail? The highlight packages they are putting together don't show a 'tough team playing hard', they show absolute criminal conduct and a team playing utter cheat ball. This isn't clutch-and-grab scrubs negating elite talent in the NHL of the 90s, these guys were playing in a way that was physically dangerous to their opponents.

Basketball was played differently and officiated much differently, and they certainly picked the most egregious clips. Those were “hard fouls.” They didn’t have the rules about flagrant fouls they have now, with extreme penalties, so the risk/reward was worth it. Go back further in nba history and it’s even worse. Stern eventually figured out that fans like scoring and offense more than they like hand checks and punches.

I'd agree with @MWB in his evaluation, @tifosi77. While the Pistons were more known for brutalizing teams when they entered the lane with Laimbeer, Mahorn, Rodman, Salley, and Edwards, they were also a very highly-skilled team. I mean, they didn't make it to 4 or 5 straight ECF's by winning 70-67 slugfests. But they were marketed on the Bad Boys theme because everybody likes a little violence (looking at you, Broad Street Bullies). The defense they concocted to take care of Jordan was very smart and well thought out. They took advantage of the way the rules were written in regards to fouls and if MJ got into the lane, he went to the ground. Between those 5 guys, they had 30 fouls to give and they were gonna use all of them if it meant keeping MJ from taking over. MWB is also right in that the NBA's history is chock full of hard fouls and fights. Name an NBA star of the 80s and he probably got into at least 3-5 fights in his career. Go back a little further and line brawls weren't an abnormal scene. A lot of the reason why the NBA Finals were on tape delay until 1982 or 83 was because the game wasn't that popular due to the drugs and the fighting involved. Many thought after the Bulls dispatched the Pistons and went on their aesthetically-pleasing run that the brutal defenses would come to an end. And then the Knicks and Heat and a few others came along after the 1998-99 lockout and the game bogged down a bit more. I won't cop to having watched much NBA over the past 15 years or so but in games I have watched the last few years, it seems the game has gotten back to a more free-wheeling, 80's/early 90's flow.

To be clear, I'm approaching this from the perspective of a man who abjectly dislikes the sport of basketball and who has been to one NBA game in their life. (I know nothing about the game, but I will say that in person it was pretty easy to see that John Stockton was on a different planet as a playmaker) So this is more of a human interest angle for me. haha

John Stockton is also known as one of the dirtier nba players, lol.

There’s no doubt this is a great human interest story, especially how the director has put it together. I don’t think one needs to be an nba fan get appreciate it.

I appreciate it and I disklike the NBA. Just finished episode 4.

Helps that the last NBA game I watched was in the late 90s, too.

I mean, it's generally a story about Jordan. Which all sports fans should appreciate

It'd be similar with a Babe Ruth, Gretzky, Tiger...Brady?...doc. Just pure interest because it's about the best of the best of the best

And people saying the Bulls would have won at least 8 straight if Jordan hadn’t retired are insane. Jordan has to get out. He couldn’t have maintained his mentality and stayed in the game. I think the doc made that pretty clear.

That was so good. I don't think Pippen would have stuck around, and any prolonged stretch with Rodman going forward would pretty much be on borrowed time, I don't know if you could keep counting on him.

When Kerr played at Arizona, Arizona State fans decided it was within their right to chant things like 'PLO' and other things related to his father's deat at him in warmups.

That was sad. Explains a lot of Kerr's stances and outspokenness now. Surprised that's never really been a story

Yeah, I agree with that. Rodman is was done after 98. The only way it could’ve worked out that year was if jordan could’ve convinced Pippen and Jackson to stay for one more year, which would’ve required Reinsdorf to pony up. Plus, they still would’ve needed a rebounder. Might have worked in a shortened season. Ironically, for all the **** that Kraus took, his (and Reinsdorf’s) actions probably produced the best ending for that group. They go out on top and never actually lose. Just sucks they couldn’t defend it.

Pippen didn’t come across great in this, but he was the perfect compliment to Jordan. His faults, for lack of a better word (migraine, refusing to go in, back), showed he was never a threat to Jordan on that team. He was never going to try to be The Man.

Are you calling out the insane people for saying the Bulls would have won after 98 or if he wouldn't have left after 93? The 93-94 Bulls team had pretty much the same roster AND the addition of Kukoc. If not for a BS Hue Hollins foul call in Game 5 of the series against the Knicks, they likely beat them again and move on to the ECF even without Jordan. With Jordan, there's no question they at least get through the East in 94 and have to deal with the Rockets. I'll certainly agree with you that after 98, that team was cooked. Rodman was going to either retire or not be as locked in on basketball anymore. Pippen wanted to get paid. If MJ sticks around, you're committing a ton of money to just two guys, three if Rodman sticks around. Only thing that makes it very curious is if they could have foreseen a lockout coming and the 99 season being just 50 games and they had the extra 3 months of rest if that same team could have given it one more run for a 4-peat. It's funny to look at that 99 Bulls roster. The only holdovers were Harper, Kukoc, Simpkins, Randy Brown, and Wennington. Hence why they went 13-37.

I just don’t think Jordan could have maintained the drive, the scrutiny, the intensity for 8 straight seasons. I think he was wired differently, and that white hot intensity can only last so long.

There’s one story, from one of the bio writers I think, where Jordan said he’d have retired after ‘92, but he wanted the third championship to outdo the Lakers and Pistons.
