COVID-19
It’s somewhere in the middle. It’s the flu if we didn’t have vaccines. In two years when a vaccine is widely available we’ll get a COVID-19 shot while we get our flu shot and we won’t think twice. I’m firmly in the camp that Influenza’s mortality rate is lower because symptoms are much milder if you’ve had the vaccine, and that the virus itself isn’t particularly weaker,
But until those 24 months are up, those with risk factors should be concerned as cases will start to spread across the mainland US. Those without risk factors should also play by whatever rules are set out to try to keep the elderly you care about safe and not accidentally transmit it because similar to Influenza, you can carry it and not have symptoms. I think in th PDT Shyster presented a really nice breakdown of the increasing mortality rate with age.

Nice call Richard, China and Italy are presenting a roughly 3% mortality rate, so way to go. So while I’d say 97% of people will be fine if they get it, I’ll give you 98%.
But as a matter of comparison (I did this in th PDT), based solely on mortality rates you’re 30 times more likely to die if you get COVID-19 than if you get the flu.

If you’re over 50. I think I saw every person in Italy that died so far was over 60 and either had cancer, congestive heart failure or above 80.Nice call Richard, China and Italy are presenting a roughly 3% mortality rate, so way to go. Don’t get me wrong, I sure as hell don’t want to test that.

This is not good: A woman in Japan who contracted coronavirus and then "recovered" has tested positive for a second time, officials have now confirmed.

In your lifetime, of all the things that people have panicked about...has even a single one of them been worthwhile in the end?All I see are people in pure panic mode talking about the end of the world or people in pure chill mode telling everyone it’s basically the flu and to stop worrying. What am I supposed to think?!
Right. This falls into that category too.

China says 14% of people who had the coronavirus but recovered and were discharged from hospital have tested positive for the virus again. https://t.co/TsdeQJ3b90This is not good: A woman in Japan who contracted coronavirus and then "recovered" has tested positive for a second time, officials have now confirmed.

Our lifetimes are like thirty years. Not that people don’t have frequent freak out, but I think we are conditioned to think everything is the media crying wolf.

UPDATE: Patient being treated for coronavirus in Sacramento came to hospital last week but was not tested by CDC, despite requests from local health officials, according to UC Davis Medical Center email.

The CDC has been bullshitting this from the get-go. At the beginning of the week they had only tested like 400 people because they wouldn’t test anyone who hadn’t traveled to or from China.UPDATE: Patient being treated for coronavirus in Sacramento came to hospital last week but was not tested by CDC, despite requests from local health officials, according to UC Davis Medical Center email.

So either it’s like HIV and doesn’t ever go away, or their community spread in China is far worse than what they are reporting.China says 14% of people who had the coronavirus but recovered and were discharged from hospital have tested positive for the virus again. https://t.co/TsdeQJ3b90This is not good: A woman in Japan who contracted coronavirus and then "recovered" has tested positive for a second time, officials have now confirmed.

if you don't test for it, you can't confirm you have it, hence no cases in US!The CDC has been bullshitting this from the get-go. https://apnews.com/c92ca9ae1c59079557e9 ... SocialFlowJapan will close schools nationwide to help control the spread of the new virus, the government announced Thursday.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe asked all elementary, middle and high schools to remain shut until spring holidays begin in late March.
The measure affects 12.8 million students at 34,847 schools nationwide, the education ministry said.

A few random musings:
Wuhan is the size of LA. They quarantined Wuhan. Imagine the logistics of shutting down LA.
Before the quarantine of Wuhan started, allegedly 500K - 3M residents fled the city.
The mortality rate for ebola is approx. 40-50%, for presective.
The data that we are seeing from China is what they are actually reporting. Scientists within our government think these estimates are off 100-800%.
There are two or three countries in SE Asia that have a prevalence that is not being reported. The case reported in Iran they cannot trace origin from an epidemiology standpoint is very concerning. It could indicate a number of things, all of which are not good.
We should be very worried and we are underprepared. The government is trying not to be alarmist, but we need to be. The testing guidelines and epidemiologic analysis of where the risk areas are is incorrect, from my opinion. Please wash your hands.

Thanks @LITT
I don't think people realize that it would be impossible for the US to quarantine areas the way they are doing it in China.
