Max sentence he's facing on the charges here in Los Angeles is nearly 30 years.

I mentioned elsewhere that I kind of hope the CA folks just drop the charges so he doesn't get to get out of prison to attend a prolonged trial out there. But with the appeals running it might be good insurance to convict him again.

After years of swirling allegations, Danny Masterson has finally been charged with rape. Of note, he hired the same defense attorney that represented Bill Cosby.

Daniel Masterson was charged on Wednesday by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office with raping three women.

The alleged separate incidents occurred between 2001 and 2003, according to authorities.

The That '70s Show star was charged with three counts of rape by force or fear. The case was filed for warrant Tuesday, according to the district attorney's office. Masterson was arrested Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., according to jail records. His bond was set at $3.3 million. He bonded out at 2:44 p.m., according to jail records.

The Scientology angle makes this case doubly interesting. This is from last year.

In a new lawsuit filed Wednesday, four women who previously accused actor Danny Masterson of sexual assault said that Masterson, the Church of Scientology, and Scientology leader David Miscavige stalked them, invaded their privacy and conspired to obstruct justice.

Among the plaintiffs are Chrissie Carnell Bixler and Marie Riales, both of whom previously dated Masterson, two women identified as Jane Does, and Bixler’s husband, Cedric Bixler-Zavala.

The suit says the four women came to know Masterson through Scientology. It accuses Masterson, Miscavige and the group of engaging in a campaign of harassment and intimidation in order to compel the plaintiffs to drop their accusations against Masterson. Among other accusations, the suit says that Bixler and one of the Jane Does were confronted by a member of the church at a sexual violence prevention event, that Bixler was run off the road by a car that had been following her, and that Bixler’s property was vandalized and her house was put under surveillance.

Does Scientology do any good whatsoever? You only hear about how awful that organization is but there has to be a reason why people join them.

There are a number of good documentaries out there, plus the odd takedown on YouTube. They are, mostly, all worth watching, because it's one of those things that you look at and the natural response is "How could anyone be taken in by this nonsense???"* But they trade on some fairly basic self-help manna that isn't unique to COS, so people see some relatively easy-to-accomplish positive changes early on, and that makes them more susceptible getting sucked deeper in, spending more money, etc., and before you know it you've spent $7,500 on books and are finding out Xenu is sending his space jets after your Thetans.

* That said, that's sort of my take on all forms of religion, which is why I stay out of the religion thread, and will not really comment any further on the matter here.
