Also in the RIP thread...

TPC Sawgrass, Harbourtown, Whistling Straits, Crooked Stick, PGA West Stadium just among the 100 or so courses that he built to frustrate pros and the common man alike.

Meant to post a couple days ago. One of the biggest influences in golf imo.. I have a Pete Dye book on all of his courses. Our club is a Dye Course so it's on the cover, pretty cool. I get to play Urbana every year. My buddy works with PB Dye's nephew. His house is right on the #2 tee. Pretty sweet course, and pretty cool knowing the Dyes are from there and the history of that course. IIRC Pete's dad designed the front 9 in 1900ish and Pete and PB Dye finished it and added the back 9.

Pittsburgh Golf Show is in Monroeville tomorrow.

Unless I can find a great deal on a 60+ degree club, I'm good on clubs for awhile.

The circus has arrived in Phoenix again. And also, the PGA Tour is here too. I’ll try to avoid the 4-500,000 people with the cart this week.

D.A. Points has 8 starts remaining on his medical extension.
David Berganio Jr has 2 which he will probably never play

santa brought me a 200 dollar dicks gift card. i feel like i should purchase new golf hardware.

my irons are from 2004
my putter is from 2005
my 56 is from 2005
my hybrid is from 2005
my 60 is from 2007
my 3 wood is from 2009
my driver is from 2014
my 50 is from 2019

i feel like irons would provide me the most improvement, but i am cheap and dont want to spend money. plus i am off my game right now and would like to go through a proper fitting so i feel like that would be a waste. i dont mind my putter.

maybe ill just got some clothes

yes, definitely get new irons. Even if they're not new, you should be able to knock down the price on a set of trade-ins, especially during the offseason.

When I bought my used JPX 900s last year, they were listed for half the price of what they normally tag for. Dick's also had a 25% off all irons sale, which dropped the price another $100. I traded in an old Ghost putter that I didn't like, which got me another... I think it was 50 or maybe even 70, I can't completely remember. But long story short, this is probably the ideal time to buy. Throw down another 100 and you can probably find a really nice set or irons that might only be 2-3 years old.

I'm also in the old putter club. I have a knockoff Odyssey that is probably from the early to mid 90s. I have tried three different putters, the most recent being a Taylormade Ghost. Loved it when I bought it, but hated it once I got on the course. Couldn't feel the ball when I putted it, so I was either leaving putts 5-6 feet short or knocking them 10 feet past the hole. Couldn't sell it, which to my fault was me probably trying to recoup my money, so I ended up trading it in and taking an even bigger beating on it.

i've had an Odyssey putter for 7-8 years now and putt well so don't mess with success imo. Also it was a gift from my late grandpa so has a little sentimental value. Anyway if Tiger can use the same putter for 20 years so can we.

Bet Scotty Cameron hates when anyone says that

I have a Yes! putter and they declared bankruptcy in like 2010 so all I can say is that it is old.

I’ll have to keep an eye out for this sale. I’ve been eyeing (sic) some pings

Watched some of the Wasted Management Open yesterday. That really has become the Preakness of golf. Love hearing the chorus of boos when golfers play it safe on 17

I was supposed to play there on a bach party 3 years ago and the other carload got t-boned and flipped on the way there and so we spent the day at the ER instead. I was really interested in seeing how that last stretch of holes felt without the grandstands

OK, so the circus in Phoenix. Not sure if the TV cameras caught it but two of Finau's kids were crying when Webb made that putt in the playoff. I mean, at some point, Finau's gotta win another event but he's just not a closer. He missed a couple of shorties on Saturday and then missed a number of opportunities in the final round. Webb goes in the water on 15 but only loses a shot because Tony can't take advantage of his length on the par 5. Then while trying to play it safe on the driveable par 4 17th, he somehow finds that fairway bunker that I don't think I've ever seen a pro hit into. Plus, he botched the par 5 3rd after a perfect drive and only made par on that hole. As for Webb, he should have been dead in the water, literally, after that drive at 15 but it's pretty ballsy to finish birdie-birdie on that stretch. He said he took 3-wood off the tee on 18 both times because he had hit a couple of poor drives there during the week. Can't ask for much better than the ways he played 18 in regulation and the playoff.

Now for the fun stuff...because really, that's why you're here...

--I only spent time on 16 during play during yesterday's morning portion. In that time, I was trying to unfurl the flag so we could get shots of the 8 and 24 on it and I got heckled to just leave the flag alone. I had to engage my referee ears so I could just ignore the idiots but I did want to tell the guy that I don't tell him how to make the fries.
--As the fans were awaiting the first group, the bleacher creatures started picking people out of the box seats and asking them to chug their drink. "Gold shirt!", "ASU", "Hawaiian shirt!". After about 8 or 9 people, they spotted a buxom blonde and started chanting 'blonde in red!'. She didn't have a drink. She flashed the crowd instead. Our camera happened to be tight on her as he was chasing around all the other chuggers. Fortunately, it didn't make air. Unfortunately for the woman, she was escorted out by police. Oh, and they were fake.
--If you remember last year, you remember Gary Woodland befriending Amy Bockerstette, a college golfer with Down's Syndrome, and watching her get up and down out of the greenside bunker in the pro-am. This year, Gary and Amy were reunited on the 10th tee and when they returned to the 16th tee, every fan in the stands had on a green shirt with Amy's "I Got This" foundation logo written on it. The tournament contributed $25,000 to Amy's foundation. It was a pretty awesome experience seeing that coordination.
--Some underage idiot stole a couple of beers from a tent on Saturday and took off. He somehow made it thru the crowd and over a barbed-wire fence but tried to use the canal that sits between the main road in Scottsdale and the golf course as his last route to freedom. That didn't work out so well.
--Also had some dumb girl steal a golf cart and try to take it for a joy ride. She was drunk. And she ran into a spectator, which isn't difficult to do when there are over 125,000 there.
--The Phoenix Open is the only place in the world where there is a police escort for the grounds crew. As we were leaving our compound on Saturday to go get interviews, we noticed the line of mowers headed to the front 9. The route takes us right past the entrance/exit and at that time on Saturday, it's incredibly difficult to maneuver through the people. So the Scottsdale PD bookended the line with motorcycle cops and we snuck in right behind the train. Wish I had taken a video of that.

And finally, my vantage point on Sunday morning/early afternoon.

Forgot one other tidbit - on Wednesday, the tourney had four ex-military parachutists land on 16. Three hit their spot. The other nearly ended up in a cactus. He was unscathed but he had to pick his chute carefully out of the needles.

Given that it happened on Wednesday, the animals gave him a pass. The music on the tee was pretty loud so even if they did boo, he’d have never heard it.
