if we're talking about pure flair (and not impact like a playoff goal), that's a top 5 alltime Sid goal imo

No kessel no guentzel types means they won't be favorites but giving Crosby a chance means it won't end like last year.

Will dumo and schultz be back and strong? Because with Marino it's a very good d when healthy

Murray is a unique kind of backup you'd like in the playoffs for a crazy hot young goalie

Lots of ifs to win it all but giving Crosby a big hearted chance is all i want after last year. Malkin and Letang are star powers with a few issues

As for trade ideas i wouldn't look for possible scoring difference makers. Id rather "overpay" for proven battlers that are thrilled to do their job. Not like a brassard type. and i know it's rare but a tanev/hornqy battling is their middle name type. Battle and give your legends a chance against the crazy young stars of the league.

Rust will have to continue his guentzel like production. I've seen the pens get bopped by a few teams like the blues this year. they've looked outmatched and still won multiple games without Crosby. With him they have a chance against some beast teams.

Anyway again I'm excited because the team play is so much better. It's already a special year and i expect to feel like in the end it will be special even if it ends with a loss. A season to be proud of.

2016-19:
Kessel was fourth in ES ice time per game among team forwards (14:43; Crosby, Guentzel, Malkin)
Kessel was third in ATOI per game among team forwards (18:15; Malkin, Crosby)

Kessel was 10th in the NHL in points during that time (303). Behind Kane, Kucherov, McDavid, Crosby, Marchand, Guadreau, Panarin, Ovechkin, Tavares.

He was fourth in playoff scoring during that time...
1. Crosby 68
2. Couture 65
3. Malkin 57
4. Kessel 56
t-4. Ovechkin 56

So just eyeballing it...RS+PO, Kessel is roughly top-7ish, top-5ish in scoring...

Most importantly, he's one of just a few guys in the league that can beat a goalie clean with a wrist shot...that's so valuable in this league.

So, in short, none of that Kessel stuff is really on point in terms of what he did for us and his stature in the league, he was a Third-Team RW All Star in 2018...
I have written before that I consider Kessel a top 10 winger if we consider the last decade. Especially production wise.

That said, I think it is a bit unfair to compare accumulated playoff production since Kessel has played many PO games compared to most players. The argument I can derive from it is that he delivers in the playoff as well, and not disappears like Stamkos...

Yeah, let's see at the end of the year if Rust can keep up his 103 point pace and 18.6% shooting percentage...I'll be surprised...
Phil never had 103 points. His best was 92 but his average over the last 10 years is about 70. If Rust can stay on a 70 point pace, I feel he brings way more to the table than Phil ever did. He's a much better defensive player, kills penalties, and is a big goal guy. I like Kessel a lot and I think he's a great player, but going into the playoffs I'd much rather have Brian Rust on my team than Phil.

I'd say the Pens' chances of winning the Cup dropped by a good 20% when Guentzel messed up his shoulder. That's at least how it feels to me.

Joke's on you, because Guentzel will return and we will win the Cup.

And as much as I love Rust, what he brings to the team can be much easier replaced than what Kessel brought, at least in his first two years with the Pens. Jake is the guy who made Kessel expendable, and Rust is not the guy who will be able to replace Jake.

TBH with how Maatta's shoulder held him back even after getting it fixed, I think it would behoove the Pens long-term to make sure Guentzel is absolutely 100% prior to bringing him back. If that means he sits til next year, I think the risk of not having him on the roster outweighs the risk of him re-injuring the shoulder because they tried to rush him back.

dude, rust is proving himself to be a beast defensively. Used to be just on the PK, now it's 5v5. not saying you're entirely mistaken but rust is now the proud owner of the category entitled 'what rust brings'

Ok, I'm taking legit bets now...

Anyone wanna bet me on Rust's end of year point total? Depending on where you put it will depend on the odds. He's on pace for 85 with his 14 games removed. I'll set the initial mark lower - at Kessel's total last year. 82.5. But I'll listen to all offers and offer a void if he misses a certain amount of games.

I hope and pray this isn't some 20 game hot streak...but I see we are slathering it on pretty thick here, so I might as well profit off of it or be wrong to the benefit of my favorite team in the world...

Operators are standing by...let's do this. Fellow confirmed degenerates: @dodint @NailedPenguin @OrlandoPenguin any of yous on the pro-Rust express and want to take my hard earned, legally-gotten money...?

I think what benefits Rust the most is that he becomes essential on the power play

just looked and hes averaging ~19 minutes per game, about 3 more than his previous career high? I'm too lazy to look but I think that's probably because his PP time is way up compared to his career average

Assuming Sid and Geno stay healthy, they are the tide that raise all boats. I think 82 ia a good number for a o/u but I'm not feeling confident one way or another to actually make a bet

Big Rust fan here and I do not disagree with crusher at all, but even if he scores 30, 35 goals this year, I would not necessarily expect him to repeat it next season, certainly not with Jake back, who'll bump him off the top PP.

That said, Rust has been outstanding this season and playing at an all-around level that possibly nobody knew he had in him. Maybe they secretly cloned Sid's brain last summer and Rust got the first transplant.

Rust never sleepy.

I feel as though you would say the same thing if he were on a 30 game hot streak. Or 35 game. So on, so forth. Dude's been incredibly consistent the entire season, and has been held off the score sheet only 5 times. This isn't a hot streak.

Since I think I started this Rust vs Kessel stuff I'll chime in. Point total is sort of beside the point. We were talking about roster build and being able to absorb no Phil if I remember correctly. Rust could put up 65 points and he'd still be more valuable than Phil. He's contributing in so many more ways than the point totals, whereas Phil was generally worthless if he wasn't putting up 70+ points.
