2019 Pittsburgh Pirates Season Thread
Yep, Greensboro was definitely the most interesting affiliate this season. I think it will also have a lot of talent next year as well. The pitching staff should have Burrows, Toribio, Ashcraft, Thomas and Florez. There are some interesting guys from Bristol on offense like Villegas, Acuna, Inoa and Valdez, and Triolo from WV. The GCL had a ton of outfielders, maybe one or two of Dixon, Walker, Siani or Bowen make the jump.Other than the team of destiny which lost in the playoffs Greensboro was a wonderful team to follow this year.
Martin Sanchez and Castro starred to start the year and got promoted. Then Bae came back from suspension and should win the batting title. Davis embarrassed himself and then rose from the ashes to crush the league the last two months. And herman with a double and hr tonight should end the year ops-ing over .800 in 70+ games at 19. Lots of ks for some of these guys but bushels of power which is the mlb trend and might work
Case dominated the league with 66ip and a 0.77 whip and was promoted. Jennings turned a corner with a very solid season at 20yo. Manasa turned in a very solid performance as the rotation mainstay with 139.2ip 3.48era 32bb 120k at 21yo. Bido was excellent.
Then some dominant relievers flashed their stuff. Notably De Los Santos and his high velocity put up 50ip 73k 12bb 1.44era. And 47.1 26bb 76k for Melendez who ended strong
Mears Murray Gardener Reyes and Ogle had strong appearances as interesting relievers
And then multiple late season starters came on the scene strong including Toribio, Nicasio and Kobos
Earlier in the year Economos dominated the league and moved up. Nova was good. Jacques and Loeprich moved up and were better. Alldred got lots of work as a big lefty reliever and was solid and Smith was good
To a non conservative degree these guys are all prospects. There is a decent argument for them all. The lowest full season level will usually have the most promise since even a 23yo pitcher here has promise as a reliever but this roster had little jetsam other than a few position players that are organizational.
Hopefully this leads to less crap at AA in the near future.
I think Altoona will start the year with Martin, Cruz and Swaggerty. Then in Bradenton they will have Castro, Sanchez, Bae, Herman and Macias who could be promoted mid season. Bolton will probably start in AA, hopefully he takes a step forward. MacGregor should return next year and he could be a fast riser assuming he comes back strong.
Indy will have a lot of returning guys like Kramer, Tucker, Martin, Craig, Brubaker and Escobar.

- Stupid weekend sweep dropped the Buccos to the 8th spot in the draft. dadholes can't even tank right.
- Bell is batting 286/384/607/991 with 8 HR, 21 RBI, and reduced his K rate to 15.2% in the 23 games since he was benched. Good thing they let him bat 209/318/429/746 with 9 HR in 54 games before deciding he might need more than one day off per month.
- Reynolds is 2nd in the NL with a 335 BA, 2 points behind Rendon. Hopefully this leg injury doesn't prevent him from battling for the batting title down the stretch. July was his worst month of the season with a 256/652/400/752 split, otherwise he's been above 300 BA and 900 OPS in every month. Put together a 351/409/596/1006 August.
- The Rookie Davis Era has come to an end as he was removed from the 40 man roster over the weekend. Will be interesting to see who takes his place and gets a September callup. Craig? Hayes? Or maybe James Marvel, who is now 7-0 with a 2.67 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 214 BA against in 60.2 IP across 11 AAA starts. There's no way he worse than Agrazal.

they are 11-8 in their last 19 games, following that 9 game losing streak to start august. i'm very excited to see the pirates put together a similar record in September so we can hear gmnh explain that there was no need to add to the roster because there were so many good things happening in late august and September

"If it wasn't for a bad month" is the new "If we had one more win per month..." or whatever he said last year.

I'm actually looking forward to hearing the new excuse, although I don't think he's going to be able to top the "if we did 1K simulations, etc."

Altoona's manager was fired.
Let the rebuild begin?

Wasn't he like the best coach in the system? Did they scapegoat him for development?

Michael Ryan:
Michael Ryan has been fired by the Pirates after being the most successful manager in @AltoonaCurve history.
Ryan:
"I don't know what to say right now. I'm just sort of confused."
"I wasn't even aware that my job was in jeopardy."
Ryan: "They just said there would be more detail later on. They just wanted to make sure I knew right away."
"There are some things as far as relaying the Pirate culture and different off the field things I could have done better at as far as meetings and things they want done."
"In the back of your mind you knew if you didn't do a very good job these things can happen. I didn't think I did a very good job this year."
"I just thought the baseball part of it and trying to get the players better was what I needed to get better at. So I see their side."

How long before Michael Ryan wins a World Series? And how long after will GMNH get a contract extension?

The players at Altoona for most of the year were mopes. Not a lot of notable talent on that team this year

Didn't that dude just win a league championship at Altoona like two seasons ago? Anybody that has difficulties relaying the Pirates culture and on-field system sounds like someone worth promoting to me.

I think it'll be hilarious when they clean house in the minors but don't fire the guy drafting and trading for bums.

I grew up with Mike. Awesome guy. When he was playing for the Twins, he used to come over and play poker and would have some great stories. We were all poor college kids and he would be basically giving away his money at the poker table. Pretty sure he furnished our house with his generosity.

Evidently, he was fired over the phone not by Coonelly or Huntingdon, but by the Farm director. Classy.

The 'Hoka Hey' guy?
2019 Pittsburgh Pirates Season Thread
Do the Pirates realize they're doing things that directly embarrass themselves? Or are they aware and don't care?

In fairness the 'Hoka Hey' thing was massively overblown by DK and it turned out like 90% of MLB teams did something similar.

Not sure why anyone cares that they fired the Altoona manager, except for Eddy who knew the guy.
A few call ups today of note, Martin and Tucker. Seems noteworthy that neither Kramer or Craig got the call. I could see both of them traded for another team's spare parts this offseason.

From DK:
I'm told that Michael Ryan was fired over the phone. And not by Neal Huntington or Kyle Stark -- the people who made the decision to scapegoat him -- but by Larry Broadway, the farm director. Ladies and gents, your Pittsburgh Pirates. All class. #DKPS #Pirates
I'm further told -- from within the organization, I might add -- that Michael Ryan was fired because he "didn't do enough culture development with player plans and other Hoka Hey nonsense." There was no elaboration here, but you get the idea.

It's just another turd floating in the ocean that's semi-interesting to talk about with the Pirates being a giant turd already. Not sure why anyone cares that they fired the Altoona manager, except for Eddy who knew the guy.

Classic Pirates with their September callups. Would hate to start accruing service time for Craig, Hayes, or Marvel, players of actual interest. Instead we'll continue giving ABs to Melky and EGon, as well as innings to Wei-Chung Wang and Yacksel Rios.
