Tackled my first Northern Ireland course yesterday. Got around Portstewart, which held the Irish Open 2 years ago. The rule as always with these type of courses is keep it out of the tall stuff. I failed miserably at times. I had more whiffs in 6 holes than I have had in maybe the past 15 years. Also incredibly hilly. The monitor at the end of the day said I climbed the equivalent of 43 floors.
Awesome! It's funny you say that, when I was looking at the overhead shots of Royal Portrush, the first thing that came to mind were the aerial shots of the Western front at Verdun. So much undulation.

You might not be saying that if you play from the thick stuff as much as I have the last 2 rounds.

Got after Castlerock Sunday night for a twilight round. Twilight meaning finishing the round at 10pm just as the sun is diving below the horizon. Fast track, deep bunkers, heavy hay when you’re off target, which for me was often. Did find a rare birdie.

Now it’s time for work. Next landscaping victim is the Open venue next Monday.

I've always wanted to play St. Andrews, but other than that have little to no desire to play the Scottish/Irish courses. I know exactly how those rounds would go and I'm already angry just thinking about it.

Some pics from Portrush thru 2 days in the spoiler. Today may have been the last day we see the sun this week.

This is my 3rd Open and the previous 2 only had one day (Birkdale) where it felt like a British Open. I say bring it on for one day but let's do it on Thursday thru Sunday when I don't have to be out as much in it.

Y’all wanted Open weather, y’all got Open weather today. Spitting rain, blowing 15-20 with 30 gusts. 16 playing 230 with wind howling in your face. It may not be this extreme come tomorrow but it’s not gonna be pristine anymore.

It looks like the wind will merely be breezy Thursday-Saturday, but then pick back up again on Sunday.

Yeah... That's not an ideal way to get your Open started.

I've never made this mistake but how do you play the wrong ball? do they not mark them like us common folks?

Crazy thing is, Duval started his round with two birdies.

OB on opening tee shot and an unplayable later in the hole. I have a goal to reach on Monday. It seems the first 5 holes are pretty easy (Spieth -3 thru 5 atm) but then it starts getting tough. Rain squalls in and out and hopefully the weather really revs up and blows Tiger off the course.

Oh and if you’re looking for me, I’m hiding behind 9 green for the next hour...hopefully out of camera’s view.

found your answer - hit two drives possibly OB, hit 2 provisionals, thought one was in but it wasn't his. Guess when you hit that many off the tee it gets confusing. Ended up being a 14 on the hole, btw

Day 1 thoughts...

Raise your hand if you had JB Holmes as your solo first round leader. Given what he's done the last couple of months, his own family wouldn't have thought it was possible. But he figured out a way to get around Portrush without any problems. Plenty of good scores out there today and they likely could have been better but the various squalls coming through evened things out a bit. The first five holes are where you had to make your hay and build that cushion because those last 4 holes were playing among the top 5 toughest on the course. Koepka doesn't go away no matter what the major tournament is. Rahm had it going nicely and then he fell off on two of the final 3 holes. I think we're looking at more of the same for the 2nd round. Weather looks to be a bit more promising but the breezes will still be up.

And if you had a Tiger vs Rory matchup for today and you saw Rory shoot that 79, you figured it was a slam dunk...and yet, you only won by 1. It certainly makes my DJ over Tiger bet look pretty nice.

My Rory and Scott winners bets look real nice. Rahm to win is in play at least

Great post, and thanks for sharing the pic!

I think Webb Simpson was going for 100:1 this week.

Is Lee Westwood only playing on the Euro Tour now? I remember back in the early 2010s he was always contention but could never quite get it done, kind of like Rosey.

The thing I've noticed about Koepka...he is rarely the guy putting up those absurdly low scores, but he is just so damn consistent.

Good morning campers, rise and shine!

Perfect conditions out here and the scores are reflecting that. Get it now cuz the ugly stuff will be here between 2-3:00 and then it won’t be as fun.

As for Westwood, I don’t think he has much PGA Tour status outside of past champion status so you won’t see him in the US much this year. He’d have won a major or two if he could only putt. He was an absolute beast in the early 2000s.
