All Star breaks are **** boring. Indy and Altoona each sent three players to their ASGs but only Pedro Vasquez got in. Mason Martin is 0 for 7 with 3 BBs and 2 Ks in his first three games with Bradenton, Cruz went 1 for 4, Swaggy T went 2 for 4, and Alex Manasa had another good start for Greensboro and should get moved to Bradenton before long.
In other news, the Atlantic League debuted an electronic strike zone in their ASG:

In other news, the Atlantic League debuted an electronic strike zone in their ASG:
Home plate umpire Brian deBrauwere wore an earpiece that was connected to an iPhone in his pocket. The earpiece relayed balls and strikes after receiving it from a TrackMan computer system utilizing a Doppler radar and deBrauwere called them as he received them .
Because the system is still in its infancy, an umpire is needed behind home in the event that the system fails to pick up a pitch, registers a pitch totally incorrectly or fails altogether.
As it currently stands, a ball that bounces into the zone is considered a strike and check swings are not evaluated, thus necessitating the need for umpire(s).
It should also be noted that umpires also have the ability to override the electronic call.
The Atlantic League will also be testing out stealing first base and moving the pitching mound back further. The debut of the electronic strike zone was largely well received with many players having already taken note of the new changes.
"One time I already had caught the ball back from the catcher, and he signaled strike," pitcher Daryl Thompson told the AP.
Pitcher Mitch Atkins noticed that pitches higher in the strike zone were called strikes, something that is often missed.
"Technically, they're strikes, but umpires never called them," Atkins said.

i'm just trying to imagine stealing first. if there's a passed ball you can run to first and risk being thrown out? you can pretend you forgot the count and walk towards the dugout after strike two and then halfway there veer towards first?

So basically just passed balls or wild pitches during the AB.Any pitch on any count not caught in flight will be considered a live ball, and a batter may run to first base, similar to a dropped third strike.

It's definitely a positive that the Pirates get this six game road trip coming out of the break, it will help decide what with the trade deadline.
There are a lot of teams that are basically in the same position as the Pirates, so it might be the right move to go ahead and sell some expiring contracts (Dickerson, Melky, Liriano, Lyles)

I don't know what the general consensus is, but Im starting to feel the removal of the waiver deadline at the end of august is just another way to bone small market teams.

No one wants Lyles at this point. But yeah, trade Polanco and extend Dickerson, I agreeIt's definitely a positive that the Pirates get this six game road trip coming out of the break, it will help decide what with the trade deadline.

Minor league players don't need two days off after the ASG like dodint ass MLB players:
Dickie Dunn is Concerned About our Top Prospects:
- Mitch Keller: 6 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 8 K, 63% for strikes
- Ke'Bryan Hayes: 1 for 4 with a K and R
- Travis Swaggerty: Hitless with 3 BB.
- Oneil Cruz: 2 for 5, with HR and RBI.
- Cole Tucker: 0 for 3 with an RBI, BB, and K. 4 HR in his 8 games since returning from injury.
Mason Martin got his first hit in Bradenton, Greensboro won 15-7, and DSL-2 is now 29-6.

I forgot that Polanco and Gonzalez were people who exist. Polanco went 0 for 4 with 2 Ks last night. Batting 176/333/353/686 in 5 games during this rehab stint. EGon went 1 for 3 with a K, batting 188/188/219/406 in 9 rehab games. He's more than halfway to playing as many games in AAA as MLB this season. Hopefully the former exceeds the latter before the month is over.

Darvish is also striking everyone out. Maybe it's just a function of post-break rust.

Hayes is hitting 320 his in 25 at bats since he returned to Indianapolis compared to the 188 he hit in the last 25 at bats he had prior to going to the IL. Here is hoping that he was trying to fight through that injury while he was struggling.
