Hollywood producer Sid Sheinberg has passed away. He might not be a household name, but he was a giant of the industry. He is best known for discovering Steven Spielberg in 1968, signing him to his first contract. He and Spielberg turned Universal from a bit player in Hollywood to a behemoth. Jaws, ET, Jurassic Park, etc.
His wife was Lorraine Gary, who played Chief Brody's wife, Ellen.

I'm not saying Spielberg got shark gig because he promised to cast Gary in the movie, but he sorta got the shark gig because he promised to cast Gary in the movie. His wife was Lorraine Gary, who played Chief Brody's wife, Ellen.
She's also in 1941!, so take that, Hollywood.

RIP Jerry Merryman, Co-Inventor of the Pocket Calculator
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles ... lator-dies"I have a Ph.D. in material science and I've known hundreds of scientists, professors, Nobel prize-winners and so on. Jerry Merryman was the most brilliant man that I've ever met. Period. Absolutely, outstandingly brilliant," said Vernon Porter, a former TI colleague and friend. "He had an incredible memory and he had an ability to pull up formulas, information, on almost any subject."
Another former TI colleague and friend, Ed Millis, said, "Jerry did the circuit design on this thing in three days, and if he was ever around, he'd lean over and say, 'and nights.'"
Merryman told NPR's "All Things Considered" in 2013, "It was late 1965 and Jack Kilby, my boss, presented the idea of a calculator. He called some people in his office. He says, we'd like to have some sort of computing device, perhaps to replace the slide rule. It would be nice if it were as small as this little book that I have in my hand."
Merryman added, "Silly me, I thought we were just making a calculator, but we were creating an electronic revolution."

He just had his 90th birthday - and was playing drums at his party.
Being a huge Beach Boys geek, I am extra sad about Hal passing on. He did a ton for them. Always loved him talking about how Brian wanted the drums on Sloop.
So bummed.

https://www.cnn.com/2019/03/10/us/babe- ... index.htmlJulia Ruth Stevens, the last surviving daughter of baseball legend Babe Ruth, died Saturday, according to her son Tom Stevens.
Julia Stevens, her son said, was 102 years old and died at an assisted living facility in Henderson, Nevada, after a short illness. She will be buried in New Hampshire, where she used to live, and would have been 103 in July, he said.
"She lived a full life and tried to do her very best ... to perpetuate the legacy of the Babe in a positive way," Tom Stevens said of his mother.
Stevens said survivors other than himself are Julia Stevens' two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

I read an article where her parents said after she suffered a concussion in December, her issues began. She attempted suicide in January, and was admitted to a 2 week mental health program. Her parents said her concussion was never addressed in the treatment.
They called her every day, as did her brother and sister. They offered their support. Unfortunately her latest suicide attempt was successful.

Frank Cali, boss of the Gambino crime family, was murdered outside his Staten Island Home Wednesday night. The first Mafia boss to be murdered since the late 1980s.

The reputed mobster, 53, was shot dead just outside his Todt Hill mansion around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday — as his wife and young children were inside.
“About 9 last night, we were watching TV and we heard, ‘Pop! Pop! Pop!’ I thought it was fireworks,” said Fred Guinta, who lives directly behind Cali’s home in the quiet, upscale neighborhood. “My wife said, ‘Those are gunshots!’ It was six or eight shots.”
The gunman ran over the bleeding Cali — who was still alive — with his blue pickup truck before fleeing, sources said.
Another neighbor who didn’t want to be named also heard the shots.
“Then I looked out and saw a blue pickup zoom past my house and fly off the block,” he said. “I looked back and saw a guy and woman screaming. I ran back inside.”
