EXCITEMENT IS BUILDINGThere is an excitement building that you would hope carries over to that number (attendance). I’m starting to hear, and you’re starting to hear how much excitement there is for this team. There is a lot of engagement and excitement around this young team.

I think it depends what one is willing to accept as an operating model, and what the factual operating model is.https://triblive.com/sports/nine-inning ... -chairman/
Does anyone even want to take a stab at this?
The annoying fact is that the ownership group still chooses to derive an income from the team, it's not massive, but with revenues in the 235mm range, the operating income is around 10mm. Not a huge number, but ultimately you'd want them to be plowing the money back into the team. the payroll has averaged probably 90mm over the last 5-7 years, the other question is how the other operating expenses are being used. There was a story on Pirates Prospects about how they are doubling the size of their Dominican Academy, and that is in concert with them adding a second team to the DSL last year and their recent large volume signing classes. I can get on board with the notion that facility enhancements, and spending resourcing on the academy is a good way to put those 16 year olds in the best position to succeed, or at least get better and boost their prospect value.
I think other investment is in analytics, like everyone else. This of course tries to squeeze as much value out of the current roster of players as possible.
What essentially you have is that the operating model for the team is to roll players through during their initial control years. And once they approach their final control years, to try and flip them for players with more control.

I agree for the most part Troy. The part that is missing though is whether they have the people at the top of the org to pull this off. I don't believe they do, and I don't believe they are serious about keeping people accountable for pulling this off.I think it depends what one is willing to accept as an operating model, and what the factual operating model is.https://triblive.com/sports/nine-inning ... -chairman/

i like the spin zone with the 'we could afford machado if we wanted to, but we dont want to jeopardize our great winning culture with that wage inequity' stance

Yeah, I'm connected to the guy on a couple of different levels. I about had a heart attack when I saw that name.
That being said, Bucsdugout has been awful since Charlie Wilmouth left. Would be nice to have someone take it on with some background in publishing.

I thought Wilbur did a good job at BD and still check it out for the prospect/minor league posts and Brian Cartwright's analytics stuff. Never really participated much in the comments.
It's completely unsurprising that SB Nation made a stupid hire but that the entire purpose for the hire was to keep the comments section to a "PG-13" level because some commenter saw words that made their virgin eyes bleed is pathetic.

onlybucs is decent. The comments on Pirates' Prospects isn't bad, but the content of the site is not worth paying for, yet I keep forgetting to cancel and my login got renewed again for 2019.

I hope you're not referring to my anti-McCutchen posts as BS. Those are well researched and without personal bias. Obviously.I've actually never read anything over there. I haven't found anything much better for Pirates talk then here really when you filter out some of the bs

There's also a thing where certain people wildly overrate these free agents just because the Pirates aren't signing them

I see no downside to signing Iglesias for cheap

Especially at 2.2 WAR. Can't say their current roster even has that.

If Erik Gonzalez sucks, there's at least on pro scout that needs to be fired, and at least one other person that trusted this scout should be fired too.
