Kucherov is only so good because he's on a stacked team

Just to be clear, the "hype" is they actually have to win the Stanley Cup for it to be considered anything, right?
Because, at game 60, they are an awfully sultry pace that is pretty well in line with the 1977 Montreal Canadiens for the most points in the history of the league...
I mean, it's not like they aren't clearly the best team in the league from the starting line to this three-quarter pole...best roster and playing the best...and it's not particularly close on either front...

They under-performed if they don't win the cup.

They were supposed to be a "buzzsaw" last year, if I remember correctly.
They completely missed the playoffs the year before.
I just think it's way too early for nearly everyone just penciling them in to the Cup final. This team/core has underperformed mightily in the playoffs in the past, and as we all remember from the Capitals of pre-2018, regular season greatness is not an indicator of playoff success.
Until they win the Cup, I'm going to be skeptical.

That's fair...as long as it's clear that it's Ricky Bobby philosophy...
They were a buzzsaw though...2 of the last 3 years they have been to game 7 of the Wales Conference Final, they year before they lost in the SCF...
Over the past four postseasons, only Pittsburgh (39) has more playoff wins (36)...so, yes, they've fallen short of the ultimate prize...but this group hasn't underachieved to the level that the Caps are worth mentioning...Blues, Sharks, Caps...those are underachievers...the Lightning don't fall into that group...

Michael, I tell ya. I don’t get this team. I think you might remember my befuddlement. That's fair...as long as it's clear that it's Ricky Bobby philosophy...

To me, they looked like Wilson and Ov wedgied them into not caring about the result last year. No guts. Stamkos has never seemed engaged that way, but I don’t think that’s a hot take. Kuch might be in the same mold, though. But it’s early.
They were flaccid in the finals, but Chicago and Keith had a hand in that. They brought it in 16, but we were butter soft.
I don’t get it.

I think you're right in a lot of ways...I think that's a more accurate portrayal of them...there's a point where they just flip the switch - but down.
Stamkos is secretly the worst playoff performer of this era. So, they put a bunch of players ahead of him...or he was passed by a bunch of players...Stamkos is now the, what, fifth most important player on the Lightning? Fourth? Sixth? That's crazy, but it's about the right. And that's ideal really for a playoff run.
But they quit against Washington last year...they didn't score in games 6 or 7 I don't think...that's absurd. They didn't score in game 7 in the 2011 ECF vs Boston. I don't think they quit, but they only scored once against Pittsburgh in game 7 of 2017. They gotta find a way to keep the lights on late in a series that doesn't completely go their way...
But yeah, Wilson started bully them...they didn't want none of that, and they quit...
I was in attendance (not a big deal) for this goal...and they quit...
Let's see the lessons learned...I think Vasilevskiy not being run into the ground with 800 regular season games will help...

I’m glad Laine exists. He’s the exaggerated version of why I never really respected Stamkos as an elite player who translates directly into wins. He’s obviously much more dynamic than Laine, but he’ll score his way. And that way is much easier on a Wednesday in October against the Coyotes than it is in April onward.
I used to have them as my #2 cup hopeful every year. But they let the caps win. It was their job to stop that from happening. I’m hoping they experience no success this postseason and meme themselves into their final state of impotence.

feel like there are two teams in the east that can beat them in a series. both are in the metro and aren't the fishsticks or the blue jacketsI used to have them as my #2 cup hopeful every year. I can't imagine how a team that never gets out of the 2nd round or a team that has had as many let downs as the Sharks had (they got worked in both Conference Finals with this group, made one SCF) compare to Tampa really...their rosters aren't made up similarly, the age of their cores aren't similar, their goaltending isn't similar, the results aren't similar (except with Ricky Bobby philosophy)...don't make no sense, I tell ya...

Way to go Detroit. Never thought they could come back 3 down and tie it up. Even if they will not go anywhere this year.

How do stick guys like Kane and E Petterson exist in the same league as mortals? Is it 50/50 with practice and coordination? I don’t remember seeing this growing up, where these guys can just make anything happen with the twig?

Sticks are a lot lighter, for one, which makes the quick movements easier.
I'd also say the level of training that goes into developing the hands is off the charts. There's so much more to do in the way of training (methods, regimen, etc) than players had even 10-15 years ago.

Culture change. Creativity is being fostered, not smothered. Guys are on the ice more, so they have more time to think/try new things. Every swinging d has a skills coach.

That's right. Which isn't to say that guys couldn't go it alone in the past...Beliveau did, Middleton did, Nilsson did, Perreault did, Dionne did...just depends on your era...
Skill development has been the hot thing for the last decade or so...which just more specific practice time...more specialized practice time = more specialized result...
Some things get lost too: ability to piece the game together at high speed, ability to convert at high speed, shift management, etc.
