Honestly, it's getting super annoying how fans of the Pirates are justifying this low-payroll saying that the players are good. They better hope the pitching over-performs, because that's all they have.
Especially if this Marte to the Dodgers rumor is true.

I think the pirates are open for business on all the vets. It might actually be a good idea to shop marte now though, he’s likely headed for decline soon. Might be the right time to sell.

And getting caught doing PEDs is stupid as most(?) players do them and don't get caught.I think the pirates are open for business on all the vets. It might actually be a good idea to shop marte now though, he’s likely headed for decline soon. Might be the right time to sell.

https://t.co/d029rQh14BSeveral reports suggest that the @Pirates could be the mystery team that would be interested in Manny Machado.

or perhaps why they want to be the mystery team so it doesn't appear that way

Outside of the archer trade, has management made the slightest indication since the mccutchen that they are interested in putting together a contender using the current core? Not really. The pirates players earned themselves (stumbled into?) a winning record last year, but its obvious that management doesn’t see enough upside in the current roster to justify the investment it would take to compete with the big boys. At this point, payroll is such a joke that shedding marte’s $10 million really shouldn’t cause that much of an uproar.I think the pirates are open for business on all the vets. It might actually be a good idea to shop marte now though, he’s likely headed for decline soon. Might be the right time to sell.
So if they dont think the roster is good enough to win now,, and they dont feel drumming up the money to pay for chisnehall, kang, and nova all at the same time, why even pussyfoot around with paying marte $10 million (which is a good value imo) to contribute worthwhile baseball?

Something has to break in this free agent thing, MLB wide. The number of unsigned players is astounding.

Reds traded for Sonny Gray and then signed him to an extension. Buccos finishing last this year.

Sonny Gray had like a 7.00+ ERA last year.

There's gonna be another labor strike, feels more like teams are coming to terms with trying to run internal caps.Something has to break in this free agent thing, MLB wide. The number of unsigned players is astounding.

I have a lot of disconnected thoughts on the current state of affairs.Outside of the archer trade, has management made the slightest indication since the mccutchen that they are interested in putting together a contender using the current core? Not really. The pirates players earned themselves (stumbled into?) a winning record last year, but its obvious that management doesn’t see enough upside in the current roster to justify the investment it would take to compete with the big boys. - The hand wringing over dumping Nova is absurd
- The projected payroll for 2019 is absurd
- They will bring in a FA SS, it will be a stop-gap
- They have a glut of guys heading into their final pre-arb season (Taillon, Musgrove, Williams, Frazier, Bell, Diaz, Gonzalez). Outside of Taillon, I don't think any of them justify an extension. So if any of these players break out in 2019, they will be headed to a decent arbitration payday, and be more likely to wait for FA. Not an optimal situation if they want to lock some players up.
- The payroll is really low because of the number of pre-arb guys occupying major roles. It's kind of a blessing, most teams would use that situation to use financial resources on other players. But that's not how the Pirates do things.
- The AAA team is going to have a really solid collection of prospects Hayes, Tucker, Kramer, Craig, Martin, Reynolds, Keller, Brubaker. The issue though, is that aside from Keller and Hayes, these are just guys that will likely be able to hack it at the MLB level, not necessarily impact guys.
- Being a Pirate fan is akin to being a Pitt fan, any glimpse of success is euphoric as the team is perennially set up to fail.

One of the Pirates beat writers said the Altoona radio team should ignore the actual game and talk about dem Stillers for the entire broadcast.
