2018-2019 Pittsburgh Pirate Baseball Club Off-Season Thread of Despair
In the grand scheme of things, NH isn't a bad GM. Trades, drafts, management of the minuscule budget - dare I say he's above average. His issue is the development of players at the minor and major league level. Whether it's the people he hires or the system he has put in place, he has to be one of the worst in the business.

Not in terms of the sheer despair brought upon my family. Take that.Western PA is superior to San Fran, imho.

https://mobile.twitter.com/jrollisonpgh ... 6110320645Source: #Pirates and #RedSox remain engaged on Cervelli, but named involved are fluid. One consistent note is that every iteration of any potential deal involves cash being sent to Boston.
Nothing imminent

Outside of Kelly, I don't really see this as an adequate return for Goldschmidt. Would think they could have gotten another higher-level piece back.

Cervelli would have the highest salary on the Pirates payroll for 2019. Does that answer your question?

I think the angle here is to swap short term assets, for longer term assets. I think they are shopping him in the same way that they shopped Harrison last year.please discuss the pros and cons of trading Francisco cervelli

I've seen a couple writers mention that their talks with the Red Sox have involved the Pirates sending money and/or prospects along with Cervelli to get rid of him. To me that signals little of value coming in return. If they make a Liriano move with Cervelli then it's just about finances.

Pros:please discuss the pros and cons of trading Francisco cervelli
-salary savings
-Diaz is better so him getting the bulk of playing time would upgrade the lineup immediately
Con:
-screwed if Diaz gets hurt

They seem to really like Stallings as a backup catcher. Even seen some asinine talk about carrying 3 catchers if they can't manage to trade Cervelli.

well the pirates bench is very deep with many many good players, some of the best bench players. I've had a lot of people tell me that this pirate bench is so deep that they can afford to carry three catchers.

I think the faster they learn that Osuna is a AAAA player the better. Stallings is better served as the #3 catcher than the backup. Newman and Kramer both need to have impressive ST to be considered for the opening day roster. So, the bench is Gonzalez, Kang, Reyes and Diaz. That's pretty good. They need a starting SS and 4th OF until Polanco returns.

Kang won't get a chance to win that job at ss?

https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/statu ... 54048?s=19#WhiteSox acquiring RHP Ivan Nova from the #Pirates, pending a review of medical records of players involved, sources tell me and @ByRobertMurray.

Well I don't quite like that, unless we're signing a starter. Preferably a lefty

screw it, sign Keuchel.. I already had them at 25 mil-ish less than 2016 payroll, and now you're cutting 9ish more off. Pay Keuchel 20 a year and you're still cheaper than 2 years ago and light years better

Well, if there was one way to cut payroll and not get worse, it would be to dump Nova
