NTP66's thread of IT
OK, let's talk about Windows 10 family controls/UAC.
First of all, this system works pretty well. I can control the hours the computer can be accessed with their accounts, set usage limits, content, and so on. It also works with XBOX, which is fine, but we have a PS4.
The UAC is so...random. For instance, I need to enter my pin to have MSI Afterburner run on either of their logins. Even after adding permissions etc., it still doesn't run at startup. I also need to enter my pin when I do use it. This is a fairly minor issue.
The most annoying issue with this setup is BattlEye, which is used as an anti-cheat service for Fortnite. Everytime there is an update to Fortnite, I have to enter a pin on one or the other kid's computer to get it to run. Never both, and not always the same computer. It's maddening.
Also, the whole UAC thing is there to protect the computers from my kids downloading bullshit to get v-bucks, Minecraft mods, and so on. Any program that updates needs my pin.
So then I see my older son has managed to download and use Opera, to get around the parental controls I set on Edge. How was this even possible? I move a .txt file from one folder to another on his login and it needs my pin...but he can download and use a browser? And no, he doesn't have my pin, because he often has to wait for me to enter it for Fortnite...and if he knew it, he'd enter it to get into his game as fast as possible.
Does anyone have any ideas why BattlEye is so finicky? Why on one computer but not the other? And this is at the same point in the game loading, too.

Sorry, I've got nothing for you there. Don't use any of that myself.
But you should ground your kid for life for using Opera, even if it was to get around parental controls.

The thing is, I have Chrome installed on that machine - and he can use it without my pin - but I don't have it in the start menu/desktop shortcut, so he doesn't know it exists.
My 9 year old got some app for his iPad that circumvents the parental controls on iOS and it let him install the full version of YouTube, which we don't let them use. He claimed it was to get something for Clash of Clans, but I called BS on that.
I'll be glad when they are back in school in a few weeks.

It isn't, but quite honestly, I've had a lot of issues with it 'crashing'. Select an item, click on the trash can, and see a 'something went wrong' message. So I have to reload the page and do it again. I use Gmail for my throwaway mail, so it's not a huge issue. The new Gmail inbox isn't terrible.

Interesting, I'll have to play around with it. I just got the option to check it out this morning.

What would be the most efficient way to share a large repository of files with multiple people (in multiple locations)? Looking to share about 2 TBs.
Here's the problem: I work as a video editor and need a way to share raw footage with multiple people across a few different agencies. Currently, raw footage is stored on a local server that's locked down to employees only. To share the footage, I would downgrade each clip, zip them up, and send them over via FTP but that's becoming too cumbersome and time consuming on my end and it's not really the best system from the agency POV either. Would a cloud server work? My company already has OneDrive so that's an option.
Ideally we'll have a system where I can work off the cloud server and those same files are available to the agencies. Only problem is OneDrive requires the files to be stored on the local drive and I definitely don't want that given the size of the files.

The HVAC in our server room went back at the end of last week and the room sat at 110F Sat/Sun/Mon. The only person having alerts sent to them was on vacation. Came in today and services were diminished, to say the least.

My BIL sent me a photo a few weeks ago of a water pipe burst. In a data center. Directly overhead of racks of servers.

The Amazon Smart Plug will be the first Amazon device that I actually return. It's not smart at all. The only actual 'smart' feature that I want it to be able to enable some sort of vacation or away mode where it turns my lights on and off for a specific period of time. Can't do that. I'd have to create multiple routines - one to turn on the lights, and another to turn off the lights - enabling them at first and then disabling them manually when I return. I'm exchanging it for a TP-Link smart plug that can actually do that with one routine.

My fish tank timers have been re-purposed as Christmas light timers. Awesome value.

Sure, a regular timer can do that, but this isn't 1985. As for fish timers, the two most popular for the past two decades have had major issues with catching fire.

It is impressive that we have a Network Admin, and an assistant but still need to outsource to a 3rd party to help open ports through the firewall -_-
