I guess he could, but I don't see it as a possibility. Anderson is a read and reactor. He reads plays and anticipates. When he is dialed in and has it working for him, he's got it going pretty good. When it isn't working, you get some really sub-par tending. Elliott is not overly athletic, doesn't ready plays particularly well, and is not super aggressive. He's kind...vanilla. He's a decent sized guy and is decent with shots in the bottom 1/3 of the net, ok with with shot in the top 1/3 of the net, and a train wreck with the middle 1/3. He has always struggled with that key save that turns a game or cements a win.So Elliot isn’t a guy who’ll go on a Craig Anderson type of heater?Good thing you don’t have to pick corners on Elliott

Elliott struggled with his positioning against the Rangers in his last game. I know because NBC wouldn't let it go.

The game that he had a shutout?
If NBC said is positioning was bad, it was probably perfect.

My only concern with this team is it almost seemed to live and die on the powerplay getting chances and converting on those chances. The conversion rate was best in the league, but when the calls dry up in the playoffs I hope the lack of 5v5 scoring picks up.

The other day on the radio, Madden was talking about how they played this year and where they finished in the standings. He thinks they may have saved something for the postseason, and that they might still have another gear to rev into.
I can't say I agree with him, but it would be nice.

Valid point. The Pens are only a +4 in Even Strength goals. Most other playoff teams are between +20 and +35.

Anderson's best is insane, like some of the best goods in the league. Elliott doesn't have that upside...

If January and February were not included they'd probably be at -100 at even strength.

If there is an "extra gear," it'll manifest itself via the forwards tracking back on defense to help the D-men out. That extra effort was not always there during the regular season. The other day on the radio, Madden was talking about how they played this year and where they finished in the standings. He thinks they may have saved something for the postseason, and that they might still have another gear to rev into.
I can't say I agree with him, but it would be nice.
One could argue that any team has an extra gear if they are proven champions - but it's not just something they can "turn on" at a moment's notice. They need to be better on the PK, and be more effective with their first pass out of the defensive zone in general. More urgency doesn't really solve that problem - but improved mental focus certainly does. We shall find out soon enough.

They were extremely healthy this year. Maybe it was related to phoning in chunks of the season. Maybe not.

Making the decision not to throw their bodies in front of one-timers during this past regular season is usually a good investment in that regard. I seem to remember Geno getting injured doing that late last season in a meaningless game. Unless you're a Rowney or a Kuhnhackl, there's no reason to risk injury like that. They were extremely healthy this year. Maybe it was related to phoning in chunks of the season. Maybe not.
