My step-Dad and I have the same birthday (12/22) so I'm having everyone over to my place for dinner this year since it's our first year in the new house. Going to make my homemade pierogi and halupki, and maybe a shrimp chowder that I like to make in the winter. I'm going to try and be responsible and make this stuff early throughout the week instead of having to call off work that day and frantically do it all that morning.

I watched about 5 minutes of Top Chef last week. I can't do it anymore.

It got better. LCK is kinda dopey, tho. I've never bought in to that as a concept, so I never watch it.

so the williams sonoma credit card seems like a good deal. you get 20% off your first purchase, can be on sale (got some knives for very cheap) and you get a $20 gift card for activation and then $25 gift card annually for birthday. plus free knife sharpening

We went to the Lancaster Liederkranz yesterday for their annual Christkindlmarkt...good time. I've had bratwurst a million times but never currywurst, which is a bratwurst with curry ketchup. I gotta say...that was good.

Hey @Gaucho, what's your favorite "traditional" German dish? Something your Oma used to make...

I used to love Sauerbraten. And Currywurst.

My grandma was the kind of person who wouldn’t share recipes. My aunt supposedly has her recipe for kolachey(cookie style), but the pierogi, and rolled style kolachey are gone.

My mother is a lousy cook, so I have to assume that my grandma was a lousy cook, too.

I don't remember my grandmother cooking anything other than breakfast stuff for us. My other grandmother we rarely saw/spoke to, so nothing from her either.
Sauerbraten sounds good. I'm curious about Currywurst - sounds like something fairly recent, due to immigration to Germany.
I would assume your vegetarian diet consists of many Middle Eastern/Indian dishes, right?

Currywurst was invented shortly after WWII in Berlin, using curry powder obtained from British soldiers.
Yes, Middle Eastern, Asian in general, and also lots of pasta.

Who has a toaster oven, who can recommend me one from Amazon. Trying to surprise my wife by taking a risk this holidays. I assume it's going to be returned, but it's the thought that counts.

One year the church my family attended compiled a cook book of recipes from all the members. They mistakenly attributed my grandmother's submission to another woman, and her's to my grandmother.
Every holiday after she had a glass of wine my dad would get her ranting about how Eloise stole her recipe. I miss them both

I'll have to look mine up, but I do not like it. The outside handle to open the door gets too hot.Who has a toaster oven, who can recommend me one from Amazon. Trying to surprise my wife by taking a risk this holidays. I assume it's going to be returned, but it's the thought that counts.
I miss my old one from college. It lasted 10+ years and was disgusting AF when my girlfriend claimed it was too broke and too unsafe to use. Fake news on the brokenness and unsafeness.

To tack onto this, I use this site for a lot of recipes and really enjoy it: http://www.slovakcooking.com/contents/My Slovak grandma made excellent veal schnitzel.

Oddly enough I've always been on the - we don't need a toaster oven we have a toaster and an oven boat. The wife has been asking for years, so I figured I'd surprise here. This hot on the outside thing is like all the reviews I've read.I'll have to look mine up, but I do not like it. Pretty much anything by either Cuisinart or Breville.Who has a toaster oven, who can recommend me one from Amazon. Trying to surprise my wife by taking a risk this holidays. I assume it's going to be returned, but it's the thought that counts.
Cuisinart made a combo convection+steam toaster oven a couple years ago. They discontinued it after only a few years because of generally poor sales, but all indicators are that it was a top-notch product. Put it this way: Even knowing it's discontinued and won't be supported by the manufacturer, if we ever get around to doing a kitchen reno, I want to get one.

I bought the older version of this in 2014 and I love it. Replaced a conventional toaster while adding the functionality of a toaster oven. We use it less now that we have a dual chamber oven but it's still holding up three years later. Ours has manual knobs instead of the buttons and clock so I can't speak to the ease of use for that.
