My stomach turned just remembering those...

There are days when I feel like not serving is the only real regret I have in my life. Then there are days like this when I read the last half dozen or so posts.

I do my part. Sometimes.

For the longest time, there was only one airworthy B-29 in the world. FIFI is her name, and she was quite the favorite on the airshow circuit. (Alas, I've only seen her from a distance of several miles) Well, now there is a second Superfortress - "Doc" - that can take to the skies, and they were just together at Oshkosh for AirVenture.

That's really pretty cool.
Much like the pilots who flew them, these planes are slowly gliding into the sunset. Not too many airworthy WWII aircraft, especially Axis planes.
I was doing some research on the planes used for Dunkirk, and really haven't turned up much. Three Spitfires were used, obviously, as well as a modified Yak-52 for in flight closeup shots of the Spitfire pilots and gun reticle point of view shots. The Heinkel 111 was a model, as far as I could tell, because the last airworthy HE-111 (actually a Spanish knockoff dressed up as an HE-111) crashed in 2004 or 5. The Me-109s were models and post-war Spanish knockoffs.

If you're into that sort of thing, you would enjoy the Planes of Fame museum in Chino, CA. They have a lot of rare warbirds in their collection, including the only airworthy Mitsubishi A6M Zero with its original powerplant.

I only recently found a (different) video of him telling the story of the 'LA speed check', which is kind of a favorite tall tale for aviation nerds. I had read the story on many outlets, so it was cool to finally hear him tell it in his actual voice. I will probably fire this up at work today, over lunch. Thanks for sharing.

Watched the video. Immediately went to Sierra Hotel Aeronautics and bought a Habu 'ichi-ban' hat.

Interesting article about how the US military is training up against Russian military, a la Cold War part II.

As a believer in MAD, that seems relatively pointless; neither is dumb enough to start such a thing.

We could try slowly walking toward detonated nukes again

BUDS has an 80% dropout/fail rate. It will only be newsworthy when/if a woman passes.

Let me guess: relieved of command, hooked up with an admin billet until he can retire with full pension and benefits.
That is the USMC way, anyway.
