The truth is, Datsyuk has been squirming to go home since 2012, the year he played in Russia during the NHL lockout. Last season he basically told Detroit he was finished, and only the length of his contract, terrific persuasion by general manager Ken Holland and personal involvement from Mike and Marian Ilitch convinced him otherwise.
---
Then a strange thing happened. Datsyuk complained of continued soreness in his right ankle — the result of what he and the team thought was a puck-related injury near the end of the season. The Red Wings took quick action, and arranged for surgery in North Carolina with Dr. Robert Anderson on June 26. Datsyuk returned to America.
“It was supposed to be 45 minutes,” he said.
Instead, according to Milstein, who was present along with Wings trainer Piet Van Zant, it took more than four hours. As the time passed and the surgery continued, a worried Milstein notified Holland. Van Zant notified Mike and Marian Ilitch.
Finally, when the doctor emerged, it was learned that “both of Pavel’s tendons were completely gone, destroyed; they had to use cadaver (replacements),” Milstein said. “Dr. Anderson said he didn’t think any active athlete could go through this and recover enough to go back to playing on the ice.”
He shook his head. “But Pavel did this. If it were me, I would have retired on the spot.”

It's Detroit, they'll find a way. They really need to hope he gets severely "injured" in the handshake line at the end of this...
But yes, he signed a 35+ contract, so his hit would stay on the books unless you can prove a LT injury for LTIR...or do what Lou Lamiorello did with Vladimiar Malakhov and have him rolled up in a carpet and thrown in the Hudson...
Actually, in thinking about, the Wings may be able to suspend him and say that he is breaching his contract...maybe...

Actually, now that I think about it further...LTIR won't work, because he's gonna actively play in the KHL...
Maybe they'll get half a chance if he doesn't retire and just bolts...(see: Tverdovsky, Oleg).
There's also the option of just trading him to the Coyotes...but the Wings did say that they wouldn't trade him...should be interesting...

Datsyuk to Leave Detroit after Playoffs, Return to Russia
Stupid obligatory agent update:
As much as Pavel Datsyuk longs to return to Russia permanently after this season, there still is a chance he could be back with the Detroit Red Wings to fulfill the final year of his contract.
Datsyuk's agent, Dan Milstein, indicated that Datsyuk's final decision will come after the playoffs.

(Saw this in the Hockey Randomness thread, but just updating this.) Apparently it's official now.
Saw some rumors that they're gonna trade the contract & make a strong push for Stamkos. Wonder what it'll take to trade away that contract, and who'd be willing to take it on?

Give NJ a Pulkkinen or Jurco plus a 2 and they'll eat it...
I'd actually like to get my hands on Pulkkinen if they're giving him away, but naturally, not with the Datsyuk dead weight...

So Datsyuk "retires" then quickly "unretires" to sign with a KHL team?

Plenty of commentary on the intricacies of this situation, but man, sucks to see him out of the league. Always one of my favorite players.
