There's been some good discussion happening about jobs in the randomness thread. Let's go ahead and bust that out into it's own thread so we can collect all jerb related items in one spot.

I'm slinging resumes like a mad man. The wife and I were trying to staying in either Cleveland or Pittsburgh, but eff that now. We're just trying to find jobs. It sucks that we both want to have careers, so we need to find a place that has jobs for both of us, and then we have to get said jobs. Phoenix, Portland, Seattle, Boston, DC, Philly, NY, we'll see what happens.

Portland would be a great place to work. So many hipsters and lumberjacks.

Lol, I was thinking the great beer and food scene, but yeah... hipsters and lumberjacks too. It's where Intel is headquartered and from what I've seen in the past of people from here that get hired there, if you have a Ph.D. and a pulse, they take you, so we'll see what happens.

If I move there I could become a Timbers fan and hate @shafnutz05 the Sounders fan even more than I already do.

I having some difficulties getting people to grok that their performance goals should be about supporting the higher level goals and not what they want to do. Sigh.

Well for us, everyone runs their own "program" and really our goals are how do we continue to grow or have success within the program.

I'm pretty happy with my current position I've had for about 4-5 months. Really was hoping I was threw with hour commutes, but while the money isn't too great right now, the job is worth it. Not really stressful at all and my boss is the antithesis of a micro manager. He'll IM once in a while just to check in, but other than meetings, don't really see him. Phone doesn't ring off the hook, which is what I absolutely hated at my last job, couldn't get a damn thing done. I just come in, get what needs completed for the day, and I'm out. Even have our own little corner of the office where theres about 6 or 7 of us where as other areas people are piled on top of each other.

I still can't believe for what you do there's no jobs around here. There's a scientific building like every 50 feet in Robinson.

Everyone wants bachelors and masters degrees OR Ph.D. with 5+ years experience in industry. I'm stuck in the middle as far as qualifications are concerned.

What do you guys actually do for a living? Myself, I work in IT (went from server admin/engineering to desktop engineering to get out of operations, which I don't miss one bit).

Guess I'll throw it over here then. How do you answer the "Why are you leaving your current job" or "Why are you interested in this position" when your only motivation is more $$?

i'm also IT. programming is my main job, but i'm director of technology for my company, and it's a small company, so i have to handle all the networking, infrastructure, procurement, security...all while building applications, talking to clients and doing sales calls.

things are shaking up around here. there's a decent chance my career could be all set for the next several years (if not longer) if things play out right. which would be very exciting, since i've never successfully interviewed for a job in my entire life.

Bet you'd love Portland. And the Timbers are so much more likable than the Sounders.

Transitioned out of programming, database design, server jockey and enterprise software management to people/process management.
They both have their +s and -s.

When I went to school, my initial track was programming. Hated every second of it, and switched to 'network engineering technology', which might as well be called 'asterisk'. Best move I ever made, IMO.
