Again, what happens if California just said, we're not sending the government any funds then, we're protecting our own, that's it.

And Oregon and Washington. And you need a passport to enter them from other states, and a currency exchange, and be subject to the new laws...

I'm starting to think he is actually going to use military force to unlawfully seize territory from a NATO ally. It's been four fcking days and we have already taken a nose dive.
Trump reportedly doubled down on his threat to seize Greenland in a phone call with Denmark’s prime minister, sending the country’s government into a panic.

Trump spoke to Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on the phone for about 45 minutes last week. While neither leader has commented specifically on the call, officials close to the situation said it went poorly, as reported by The Financial Times. They stated that Trump was “aggressive and confrontational” on the call.
“It was horrendous,” one official said. “He was very firm,” another added. “It was a cold shower. Before, it was hard to take it seriously. But I do think it is serious, and potentially very dangerous.”

“The intent was very clear. They want it. The Danes are now in crisis mode,” another official told the publication. “The Danes are utterly freaked out by this.”

AuthorTony wrote: Fri Jan 24, 2025 1:55 pm There's a really interesting documentary on Hulu called "The Grab." It's about water/food shortages and how countries are buying up farmland and raiding water supplies around the globe, including in the US. It's worth a watch.
"Rotten" on Netflix is another good one about the geo-politics of food. (There is a criminal avocado cartel in Mexico that's more powerful than the narcos in its region. Who knew.)

States don't really pay money to federal coffers, individual and corporate taxpayers do. The only influence a state could wield like that would be if its Congressional delegation all banded together as a bloc to never vote in favor of disaster relief.

In confusing news, a guy walked into a school in Seattle with a gun to prevent any possible shootings from happening there.

CA must adopt common sense policies to prevent fires. 8 years ago I was talking to ppl from Austria, ppl from Finland, people that live in forests. One of the great leaders of Austria said 'we don't have forest fires & we have trees that are actually more flammable'...they rake their forest.

The trees are loaded with water. They suck that water out of the ground ... it's called management of the floor.

From 2018 fires:
While touring a town ravaged by the Northern California Camp Fire on Saturday, President Trump said Finland's president claimed the country doesn't have many problems with forest fires because it spends "a lot of time on raking." Finland's President Sauli Niinistö said the topic of raking never came up in their conversation.

We shouldn't be in a position where you have tumbleweed that's dry as a bone. Even tumbleweed can be nice & green & rich & it's not gonna burn. You don't even have to remove it. It's not gonna burn. But it's just dry. So I hope you can all get together & say I'm so happy with the water.

It’s everything my conservatives fear with DEI initiatives… is he the best man for the job? No… clearly he isn’t. But he’s got Trump’s nuts in his mouth, so let’s lower the standards.

Talked to someone who works for the government and is no longer allowed to work from home as part of Trumps mandate. She’s been recognized as being great at her job. Now she gets to have two hours of commute time added to her day and will most likely be less efficient, along with quality of life going down. And this is a good thing why?

I haven't been officially notified yet but that is the position I am in at the moment. I sold my house in Allison Park in 2019 and moved to Latrobe when I was made full remote. I am the supervisor of a team of people I have never met in person, but now I'll lead them from Pittsburgh instead of Latrobe even though most of them live in the southeast US.

I am considering all options.

There are obviously jobs that are not remote friendly. There are just as obviously jobs that are well-suited for it and can be done more effectively and efficiently that way. This policy will make the government less efficient and will also make good workers leave.

The cruelty is the point.

Of the 450 or so people that work in our IT directorate I bet 90% of them are remote and completely geographically disbursed. Our HQ is in Mississippi.

What they're doing, though, is making us pick an office within 50 miles to change our work address to (mine is my house at the moment) and in 30 days that will be my place of duty. If there is no place within 50 miles the government has to pay to move us. The office just has to be an office, it doesn't have to suit my mission or have any of my co-workers there.

If I ultimately have to report to an office my I will try to find a spot in Saltsburg. That would be a pleasant drive.

The hope is our agency fights to get exemptions granted. We'll see, they're awaiting guidance from higher agencies to trickle down.

Thanks.

I work for an agency under the DOD. Trump wants to boost the DOD budget by ~$500b or more annually. I imagine most of that will be funnelled to contractors but it affords some protection I think. And my agency does infrastructure and disaster response (like rebuilding NC, etc.). As for me specifically I work in cyber which is a highly valued occupation in government. Those pieces may align for me to keep my current situation. It's notable that all affected FedGov employees were supposed to be notified by 5pm today, but no DOD agency did so.

My old boss and co-worker (they left together) that abandoned our agency to work for the Dept of the Interior might be proper ****, though.

I have been off work all week, I took it off to work on a plumbing project at home. Monday is going to be a challenge.
