Just a little update on Ace. He's doing well after his surgery and the hair they shaved off is growing back. He looks goofy with one ear but doesn't seem to mind it. Hopefully the other dogs won't make fun of him when he goes to daycare soon. More excitedly he's starting to grow some whisps of butt and leg hair that he didn't have when we got him. We're proud of the way we've rejuvenated his skin overall but the dude needs some hair, it's getting cold out there on his walks.

Image
He is well on his way to being quite comfortable in his new home.

As for myself I've largely gotten over my early reluctance. I don't want to diminish or insult women who suffer from Postpartum depression by comparing my feelings to that, but it's the closest analogy I can find. My reasonable side knew adopting Ace was a great thing, but my emotional side just wasn't having it.

Fortunately I've developed a fondness for Ace. He's quite certainly Ashley's dog, they're inseparable when she's home. But Ace and I have good times through my work day and I miss him when I'm away. We're looking forward to taking him on some trips next year and getting him into daycare soon.

I'm thrilled to hear all of that! I felt pretty terrible when I saw how upset you were, and felt partly responsible since I kept pushing him on you.

You did great. I was bringing a lot of baggage to the situation. Weirdly two months and two vacations later I'm feeling much better.

1.) It's my wife's. I move it just about every day.
2.) If he's already asleep on it and I try to move it, he'll wake up and sprint to the door thinking it's time for a walk. It's just better this way.

Our old boy, Gomez, has been having some trouble with seizures lately. Heading to the vet tomorrow to get checked out as he’s had three in the past few days (that we know of).

Dude has been through so much and he’s 15 or so months out since being diagnosed with cancer and a “6 week to 6 month” estimate. My guy is tough as nails, but I fear wear drawing toward the close.

After about 6 or 7 seizures (that we're aware of) over the past 5 days, Gomez seems to be stable over the past 24 hours. Doc gave him some anti-seizure medication, and he appears to be seizure free for the time being. I think he's become very weak over the past week or so though. He's having trouble getting in and out of his favorite spot, the rocker recliner by the window. He's having trouble on non-carpeted areas as his legs just give out. But last night there was a good flash of old goofy Gomez. He came over to the couch and demanded to be pet by rubbing his back hard against our legs on the couch.

The doc also gave us a scorecard that we can use to start thinking about end of life decisions. They're some questions that you give scores for each and it makes it a more objective decision rather than just gut feel. Luckily, looking at the questions and his current scores, we're not anywhere close to that right now. Who knows what the coming weeks may bring.

If his issues on hard surfaces persist I can recommend Dr. Buzby's ToeGrips. They helped Ava for a while.

Our vet gave us a very similar questionnaire and directed my wife and I to take it separately and then compare notes.

Thanks for the rec. I'll take a look.

Yeah, my wife was the one at the vet with him, but she said the vet instructed to take them separately and compare scores and notes.

Huh, the reviews for those ToeGrips things are... interesting.

5 stars: "worked wonders! gave our dog new life!"
3 stars: "They worked really well, but $40 for some rubber bands??? WTF?"
1 star: "They don't stay on and they're expensive."

Ava had a unique gait. We had to glue them onto her rear paws because she slid her feet outboard rather than a normal front to back movement.

They are expensive for an item that is seemingly so small, but you're paying for the outcome not the materials.

It would be nice if you could choose the colors. The colors correspond to the size. Ava's were green. Just make them all the color of the nail, so a gray/brown, and just send me the size I want.

You are the second person to mention toe grips this week, I had never even heard of them until a colleague mentioned them the other day. Our 13 year old is doing great but she does get the back feet slides sometimes on the laminate.

We got the ToeGrips. WIll put them on this weekend. Seems straightforward and easy enough.

His anti-seizure medication (Keppra) has been doing its job. Since he's been on it, he's been seizure free. Unfortunately, it does seem to have caused some coordination/loss of balance issues. It's usually when he first gets up, and he gets over them relatively quickly. I'll take that over 3-4 seizures a day, for sure.

Murphy turned 7 yesterday. He got spoiled at camp with a peanut butter treat, and getting his picture taken for a christmas ornament. He then got peanut better flavored ice cream last night with a candle in it haha. He is getting so white in the face in his old age...some pics below.

He always looks serious in pictures....he's not the biggest fan of getting his picture taken :D . I don't know how they get him to sit so perfectly for them when they do it. It takes us a bunch of cheese and pepperoni to get him to sit for like 30 seconds to try and get a picture for a christmas card.
