Good stuff.
I saw three buck and three doe on opening day but couldn't get a good count on the points. The last one I let go my Dad shot while we were packing up to leave.
He bought a canner this year and is excited to try that out.

I can't ever get into canned deer meat. Idk, texture, sight, it's all off putting to me.
Outdoor Activities
This was my first time processing my own deer. I have a friend who does it as a side hustle but he and I kind of grew apart over the years and he's now at $140 (!!!) to cut and wrap, plus the extras. I hung around him enough to know how to do it all. The only thing I dont have is a nice refer trailer but with it not getting above freezing I was all set.
Outdoor Activities
Yeah, I'm not sold on the canning either but he's pretty excited about it.
Good on you for taking that on. I'm super lazy and am happy to pay that cash.

I'm ending up with about 5 lbs of jerky and 16 lbs of slim Jims for around $47. If I paid the butcher for that I'd be around $196 + $140 to cut and wrap. Plus it's nice knowing I can do that if fit hits the shan.
Outdoor Activities
Question for yen, my brother was the hunter and always supplied us with his deer snacks. That's not happening anymore. Can anyone goto a butcher and get specific items or do you have to shoot a deer to get it?
Outdoor Activities
A licensed and inspected butcher isn't allowed to sell deer meat. There are programs called hunters sharing the harvest. I'm not sure if you have to be on like food stamps or something to get that.
My local butcher shop sells beef sticks that taste almost identical to deer.

Outdoor Activities
You can hit one with a car and take it to a processor.
Outdoor Activities
I filled my antlerless tag Saturday afternoon. I skinned it for the first time this year, but dropped it off at the processer (my neighbor). I'll gladly pay him for his services rather than do it myself. I'm far from a trophy hunter. I just want one for my freezer for the year.
Outdoor Activities
I got two antlerless tags this year. I'll probably only fill one, but if we get another cold stretch here from Saturday on, I may shoot one then. Having the ground meat on hand is wonderful honestly. I make anything from tacos to chili with it.
