Alex Goligoski calls it a career. He's 39 already...yikes.

Working on an all-time goalie list, but given that goalies are extremely sensitive to the team around them to get stats and accolades (unlike, say, Erik Karlsson who can be turned loose for 100 points and a Norris on the league's worst team; a goalie can't just go out there and do that)...so I'm trying to create a talent-based, but also recognition-cognizant list. I'm sort of stepping backwards through time. Need at least 3 or 4 quality seasons for you to be relevant I think...
Here's where I'm at at the moment in case anyone wants to comment...I know goalies are voodoo. So I'm not expecting much...
EDIT: Corey Crawford should have a line through him.

Are these ranked within each group? Are you are saying Vasilevskiy is the best of all time?

I know it's not in any sort of order, but I am considering not taking this seriously unless you move Brodeur to the top of the list.

Wow, someone that might actually like Brodeur more than me...?!?! That was not what I was thinking the first non-meow comment was gonna be...

I'm just getting back to the early 80s/late 70s...working my way backwards so that I understand the evolution and what was important. I even watched some 80's goalie coaching videos just to see what they were taught to do for better context. I'm trying to read what early NHL goalie coaches were doing (if they had them) just to help adjust my eyes.
But I figure I can count on one **** how many people watch old games multiple times per week like I do haha - so I figure I'd start getting feedback with guys that are more approachable without putting together an overwhelming list that includes how much I like Gerry McNeil...

This might get him pushed to the Bobrovsky tier. I love Flower, but the consistency and the mental are so questionable...as we may well recall...

Is Jacques Plante too far back for your range? I see you have Esposito on there, and for some reason my mind is thinking they played at the same time.

Plante's prime was late 50's, Tony O's was a 70's goalie. Tony O didn't play in the original six at all actually.
I'm expecting Plante to rate very, very highly though. He's one of my couple last potential chances at an "A" talent I think, him, maybe one other O6 guy, and maybe Tretiak. I'm not *expecting* anyone else...

You know, got him mixed up with Ken Dryden in my head.
Now re-read my post but sub in Dryden for Plante lol.

Haha fair enough, I'm gonna really take my time on Dryden, Tretiak, Tony O, Holecek, etc. they're tough evals.

I see a little recency bias here specifically around saros, Gibson, holtby, Schneider.
Saros two tiers above rinne? Meh.
I’d also drop Carey to tier two. I think there’s a clear divide between him and the four you have him with

I would listen to an argument for Price being the best ever. Historically, people talk about the best goaltenders and these are the guys that did something totally different than the generation before them. Roy with the butterfly. Hasek with the street hockey style. Brodeur with old-school, new-school style and playing the puck. I wouldn’t call it gimmicky, but it’s gimmicky-adjacent.
Price didn’t do that. He was absolutely elite for a few years. I put his 14-15 season up against any single season performance of any goalie.

I don't see any argument for Rinne being better technically or the same tier as Saros. Rinne is flawed for a Finn.
Schneider and Holtby, I see a case, where they belong with the tidy positional guys like Kolzig and Dan Bouchard.
Gibson is very talented in my opinion, just rarely available and superbly disadvantaged by team...
Absolutely no chance I'd move Price down. Good points by meow too, I didn't think of it that way.

So then this is a “best at their best” list as opposed to best body of work
