not upset, more like they think it’s a plot hole or something

That was a great episode but maybe just a “good” finale. When is season 2? 2024?

Great episode, great season. Whew.
My son has started watching GoT and is almost all the way through season 2. I plan on watching The Rains of Castamere with him and film his reaction.

I forget who it was that was worried about viewership drop-off but it seems okay.

It was me. I was surprised they were able to maintain the numbers
I think it goes to show that GOT fans are very interested in more shows and that HOTD is good enough to keep people engaged. I wouldn’t be surprised if HBO invests even more in GOT (beyond the Snow series)

The lore was/has always been fantastic.
I think the whole prequel thing announcement was just rolled out at the wrong time. I don't think anyone was done with GOT, the last two seasons were dogshit, precisely because Martin gave up trying to conclude the story, and if Martin threw his hands up in forfeit, how was Amanda Peet's husband able to do it? So the response was collectively kind of like "**** you finish the first thing".

I considered myself "done" with GOT after the last season. I was not excited at all for HOTD. The previews looked "meh" to me. With that said they sucked me in from episode 1 and I was glad to be wrong and excited to have something to watch in that world again.

Exactly. Curiosity lead to the big premiere number. Quality and consistency lead to the big numbers throughout and especially the finale. HOTD proved itself and earned that finale number.

Also, pretty great contrast with the LOTR thing.Exactly. Curiosity lead to the big premiere number. Quality and consistency lead to the big numbers throughout and especially the finale. HOTD proved itself and earned that finale number.
Plot and writing limitations can be covered up a lot by casting and performances, it cannot be covered up by investing in special effects.

Also, I really liked the final episode. Season 1, similar to GOT, was weird because it was all set up but I thought it they nailed it (it also made the ending of ep 9 look less interesting). The scene with the dragons was really well done (as well as completely jarring)

I understand that every writer has a different process but I can't wrap my head around knowing how many more pages will be needed before the story ends. That's bonkers.

eh, considering how weird GRRM is and how many books he’s written previously, it wouldn’t surprise meI understand that every writer has a different process but I can't wrap my head around knowing how many more pages will be needed before the story ends. That's bonkers.
not sure if you do this in your job but in software engineering, it’s common to do estimations of work; including work that’s months away. It’s not easy and we’re often wrong but once you’re familiar with the work you can ballpark it

It was my education, sadly not my job. I've written a ton of stuff (though not much lately). That's just so different from the way that I worked that it's difficult for me to wrap my head around. I'm not saying it's a bad method, obviously it's worked for him. I just can't imagine working that way.

I wonder what his expected error percentages are. In my previous teams we usually underestimated by about 33%. At one point I’d automatically inflate my teams’ estimations to account for it
but software engineering is obviously much more science than art

I'm way behind, but I just finished up HOTD. I enjoyed it more than the last 2 seasons of GOT, but that's a low bar.
I had mixed feeling overall. It was a beautiful show to watch and very well acted, but the time jumps made it hard to form much of an emotional connection. Huge, life changing events happened to characters and then the next ep, or sometimes the next scene, it was like they were forgotten about. Characters came and went without us getting to know them at all. It all so rushed. The first 7 episodes felt like a history book, where we had to be shown certain events so we'd understand the context in the future, but there was no heart to them. It was all, "just the facts ma'am."
That said, it did come together in episode 8 and the last couple eps were riveting.
