It's funny worse, I only remember Nordgren because of the Recchi trade...

Randomly looked at the 2012 draft and woof did the Pens whiff between Pouliott and Olli Maata. Totally missed on Trouba, Forsberg, Ceci, Tom Wilson, Hertl, and the best goalie in the game today.

Fleury was way before 2012.

I was fired up when they traded up - thought for sure they were taking trouba and then they went way off everyone's board.
At least everyone else drafted poorly roo. Yakupov, Murray, galchenyuk, G. Reinhart were first 4

Easy to draft in retrospect

No doubt, but they could’ve thrown a dart at a board and easily landed on someone better than DPEasy to draft in retrospect

Shero should be fired again.

I remember thinking they were trading up for Forsberg and being disappointed. Seemed like they needed forwards more than dmen, but that was not the Shero way. Not really that disappointed though because I generally have no idea about the draft.

I don't think Maatta was a horrible whiff relative to position. All those names went before him. He was initially tracking well.Randomly looked at the 2012 draft and woof did the Pens whiff between Pouliott and Olli Maata. Maatta has played over 500 games and is only 27. I cam see him getting to 800-1000. That's pretty damn good value for 22nd overall

I still think in an alternate universe where Maatta didn't break his shoulder and knee or whatever and get cancer that he turns out much better. He was pretty good at first

Yeah, Maatta made the NHL at 19 and was able to play well in middle pairing minutes...he was a 20 minute defender at the age of 20 and 21...I mean, is there a player picked between 20 and 50 in that draft that you'd rather have? Maybe Skjei, sure, now...but not at the time considering what a mess Skjei was defensively during our Cup years and how good Maatta was...

I said between the pick of DP, I think Olli was a fine pick based on what he turned into. The Pens traded up and whiffed.I don't think Maatta was a horrible whiff relative to position. Edit: looked above, poor wording on my end.

DP was a terrible pick and adding Forsberg to the mix as talent and scoring from an ELC could have easily better another cup or two from that initial group.
mikey's Thread of Penguin Randomness
Hindsight is 20 20 and I would rather have had Forsberg than DP. But I don't think we would have won any cup anyway with Bylsma as coach.
I still have nightmares about how Igilna was handled...

Yeah, fantasy re-drafts are dicey business as far as I'm concerned. Even as far back as something like Toews instead of Staal. Obviously Forsberg over DP is a massive upgrade. But butterfly effect, etc., we still came out with 3 cups with this core in the cap era, including a back-to-back. I'm not sure I'd risk giving that up to mayybe get one more cup? Again, we'd still have Bylsma as a coach and Shero as a GM for a large chunk of time.
