Well the Jimmie Johnson experiment almost ended Sunday. If Ericsson had gotten jumped on the last restart and cost Chip a 500 win I wouldn't put it past him to kick JJ out of the seat.

It's amazing how much grip you lose when you put the wheel entirely on the grass. All by yourself, for no reason.

I thought O'Ward blew it, anyway. I'm not IndyCar driver but if someone is using the entire width of the track to break the slipstream there is a point where you need to stop following them and just go around on the high side. He was allowing himself to get checked up by a driver who was effectively covering a lot more distance than is optimal.

Agreed. I was pretty shocked he let Ericsson lead him around on a leash like that. I'd rather Sato it into T1 than back out like Pato did, but that's just me.
Although there was a part of me that would have found it hilarious that Pato just inked his new contract and a week later he wins the 500 which would have been worth quite a few bucks in that negotiation. Nothing against him, but I love a good comedy. Just like seeing JJ end Chip's chances for a win. It would have cruel for them but hilarious for me.

There's so much stupid to unpack with that final pit sequence, I don't know where to begin. Binotto can go suck some lemons.

Its a special kind of dumbshittery when the topic of conversation is how incompetent you are after a win.

Yeah. It pissed me off in a similar way to the last race of last season, but obviously for different reasons. Each instance had a race ruined by the combination of an idiot back marker and off-track incompetence.

I like Charles a lot, but it's clear he's not on the same level as Crash. Like, all things being equal....... they are not; Crash will finish ahead on track, that's just the way of the world. So when Crash has been relegated to scrabbling with midfielders and Chucky Monaco is going like gangbusters out front, f**king seize that opportunity by the throat. How does a front running Formula 1 team **** this up so badly?

Have the car radios been made available yet? I'd love to hear what LeClerc was yapping about for the 30 seconds before and after this little bit. While the team should rightly bear 100% of the blame here, I think back to the days of Schumacher and in a similar situation I think he'd have just pitted unannounced and let the team figure it out on the fly....................... then again, I can't imagine Ross Brawn not being all over this call preemptively. Like "Car stopped on the track, Michael, be ready to box with a safety car to change to softs............... BOX BOX BOX this lap, now, please."

I think that Ferrari engine failure was one of the most thorough and catastrophic engine blowups we've seen in F1 in years. You could see bits of engine punching holes through the sidepod covers. To borrow a line from the "I Do Cars" YouTube engine-teardown channel, I do believe there was a whole lot a malice in that combustion palace.

Ferrari needs to get on top of these reliability issues asap. Leclerc would probably be leading the WDC at this point without the issues even with the terrible strategy calls. And ferrari should be leading the team standings too

I don't even know what to say any more. Ferrari keeps getting results despite what appear to be their best efforts. They're almost like The Producers this year.

OK, putting this here because what a day in the motorsport driver's market it was:

First, Denny Hamlin & Michael Jordan's NASCAR team announced that Tyler Riddick would drive for them in 2024. His current employer, Richard Childress Racing, posts a we're proud of what Tyler has done and we're focused on winning a championship this season, BUT THE TIMING COULDN'T BE WORSE.
And then things got worse:
At 2 o clock Chip Ganassi Racing announced that they'd picked up the option on 2021 Champion Alex Palou's contract for 2023.
Within 2 hours, Alex had gone to Twitter to say, uh, no you haven't. For personal reason's I'm leaving CGR.
Which was closely followed by McLaren's F1 twitter account that Palou was joining their stable of drivers for 2023.
What a screwy day.

In other news, that apparently leaves McLaren with the following open wheel drivers contracted for 2023:
Pato O'Ward
Felix Rosenqvist
Alex Rossi
Lando Norris
Daniel Ricciardo
Alex Palou

For 2 Formula E seats, 2 F1 seats, and 3 Indycar seats.

I think he'd be serviceable everywhere else but even with the win last year he hasn't been able to touch Lando.

Peter Windsor had a video up talking about blaming the team for Charles' off, micromanaging his driving. It's okay to say he just binned it, mate. This is what i was talking about before. Charles can be great, but I have zero confidence in him.

At least when Ferrari were this incompetent in the early 90s they were also slow, so they weren't chucking wins or podium finishes down the drain.

Yea that was on Charles. But Ferrari was also telling him to push because they were considering a one stop. Which again, made zero sense because Ferrari was faster, Max was caught up in some traffic after his stop, and the car was at least equal and passing seemed difficult yesterday.

Ferrari has the fastest car this year and it’s consistent everywhere. Leclerc has been great but he is a little like Max before last year, maybe just not totally ready for the championship. But the biggest factor this year has been the reliability and the **** pitwall being run by complete morons

I don't remember if it was on the world feed as it happened, but wasn't Sainz on the radio correcting the pitwall about what penalty he was facing for the usnafe release? They thought it was a 5s stop-go, and he was like no it's a time penalty. He'd have finished more than 5s up the road if he hadn't stopped. They are all idiots.

Replace them with Germans.......... they could replace them with German house cats and I don't think it'd be any worse.
