Football is far from my favorite sport, so I don't have much of a dog in this hunt, but it strikes me that a game where there is a very clear divide between offense and defense (to the point where for decades each of those have had entirely different players) and clear differences in possession between the two should have an overtime format where each team gets the opportunity to play both offense and defense. The current overtime rules strike me as something akin to saying that if a baseball game goes to extra innings but the visiting team hits a home run in the top of the 10th inning, then the game is over immediately and there's no opportunity for the home team to bat.

As others have said, current rules are fine for regular season. Limit time, number of plays, etc. Playoffs, though? Come on, man.

I don't get the weird disdain for the home team Superb Owl.
If you host the game at a League facility, it's gonna happen. Part of the reason they went so long without it happening before last year was they used college venues every few years; one of them was at Stanford stadium, and the 49ers won it, which was more of a 'home game' than their actual home games are now.
