Steelers 2021-2022 Offseason Discussion
Someone was bringing up how cheap the Steelers are when it comes to hiring assistants, and I think I saw DD mention it above. They do need to pony up for a legit OC/DC
Steelers 2021-2022 Offseason Discussion
I don't know about that though. Do we care if his assistants leave and succeed elsewhere? Surely Belichick isn't getting dinged because his assistants all flame out as head coaches

I would guess the coordinators are making some industry standard amount. It's the position coaches and quality control guys I think that they need to think about being less frugal with. Also the amount of assistants, I think I read the Steelers have one of the smallest staffs in the league in terms of gross numbersSomeone was bringing up how cheap the Steelers are when it comes to hiring assistants, and I think I saw DD mention it above. @dodint I'm not sure you'll find an official definition from any league authority. I think it's just generally accepted as any assistant that goes on to be a head coach
Steelers 2021-2022 Offseason Discussion
Yea I don't know if we should or shouldn't. Through natural progression, I would expect through 15 years to see his assistants do something. I look at it as "WHO ARE YOU GONNA REPLACE HIM WITH?" and my answer keeps coming back to who cares? He tangibly hasn't done anything in the last ten years outside of finish about .500 in the regular season...and hasn't developed anyone that we could even promote internally, and I start to look at it as he's just coasting.
Is that the standard we're happy with now? Getting blasted in the playoffs, and the limited success in almost a decade he's had really kind of does irk me.

I'm not the biggest Tomlin fan. I've said before that he's a great Tuesday-Saturday guy. I think if they brought in an assistant coach that handled basic **** like time outs and clock management it would go a long way. It kind of blows my mind that NFL teams don't have an 'Efficiency Coach' that sits in the booth and does that kind of work; managing clock, running scenario probabilities. I bet in the end that job would bring more value than something like a strength coach.

Pretty certain we have the smallest staff in the NFL. Most teams are continually expanded their staff and the Steelers have stayed the sameI don't know about that though. Edit: this was from 2019 but I’m pretty sure it’s continued

I wonder if its a Tomlin thing or a Rooney being cheap thing, or both? It's definitely intriguing. You would figure the more good football minds the better

Tomlin seems like he'd be really good at being the baseball equivalent of a bench coach. The Jeff Bannister to someone's Clint hurdle if you will.

I agree that biggest need is O-line. Which is nuts when you recognize they blocked for a rookie that ran for 1,200 yards.

I don’t see an issue with having fewer coaches. You get too many cooks in there and it turns into a mess. Fewer coaches means a more consistent message. It also lets upper management know who exactly is fudging up. O-line stinks? Hey O-line coach, you stink ya fired. Linebackers stink? Hey LB coach, you stink ya fired. That article has the Eagles with like 13 assistant to the regional managers. What go does that actually do? The Eagles **** blow

Don't worry, some janitor that stood next to Lebeau in the hallway 15 years ago will turn up and take the job.
Just like last time.

while i agree that the OL is a concern and should definitely be a focus; however, in the draft last year, everyone bemoaned the bungles for drafting chase. having gamebreakers at the skill positions can make up for a lot of the other short comings. the steelers actually have a a number of offensive weapons: najee, dionte, friermuth, claypool (maybe), jjss (if he's back). a weapon a qb should be the priority (along with DL)
Steelers 2021-2022 Offseason Discussion
I agree with this. Also, it seems that OL hit later in the draft more often than other positions. Just anecdotal evidence of course, but thinking back over the Steelers past twenty years or so, Decastro and Pouncey were basically the only early round picks. Foster, Gilbert, Feiler, Beachum, Starks, Colon, whoever else they churned through, weren't top picks.while i agree that the OL is a concern and should definitely be a focus; however, in the draft last year, everyone bemoaned the bungles for drafting chase. having gamebreakers at the skill positions can make up for a lot of the other short comings. the steelers actually have a a number of offensive weapons: najee, dionte, friermuth, claypool (maybe), jjss (if he's back). a weapon a qb should be the priority (along with DL)

Now, obviously those two guys were anchors for a decade, so it's not to say going early on OL is a bad idea either
